I'm looking for a little guidance/help. I don't know much about Husabergs, which is why I'm here.

I'm a guy who really can't afford to roadrace any more, and I have a dirt bike track just 8 miles from me in Chester, SC....

So I think I'm getting ready to buy a used dirt bike and tool around with a buddy of mine.

I've limited experience on a dirt bike, but I'm pretty well coordinated, just getting fat since I've had two kids(2 1/2 yrs and 6 months) and don't excersize as much. (which is another reason I'm looking at dirt bikes, to get my fat *** back in shape).

I weight about 220 lbs, I should weigh about 190.(giving u this info. for suspension reasons)

I found a used Husa, 1999 model FE that looks interesting. I've ridden a late model Yam 400F a bit, which was a beast to me, and had a better time on a DR-350....

Anyway...can I get parts for this bike? The suspension looks like it has some tasty stuff on it...but I'm concerned with the buyout/KTM situation that they may have abandoned the older stuff....

Is this bike reliable? How hard is it to kick start?(no e-start on this one).

Thanks for any help/suggestions you guys have to offer.

you should be able to get it at a very good price at that age. the engine has been superceded but there has never been a complaint that parts aren't available.

fact is though-it's a 7-year old machine and you should expect to do a lot of work getting it in shape. it's probably a better handling bike than the WR400 (i owned one for 2 years) and will have a little less power.

no real reliability issues but we'd be less than honest if we didn't say that you gotta go into this with your eyes open!! 8O 8O

to me, and i realise that i'm in a minority here, the more the previous owner has done to it-the better!

you'll know sensible mods-or a friend will-and if they're sensible then that's good news.

with roadbikes, the more they were fettled-the more you were told to avoid them.

have a look through 'forums' and check out hundreds of old threads for things.

there is a VERY, VERYstong following of the pre-2000 bikes here. they won't hear a bad word said! you'll soon twig who they are!

1999 is a quality year.

Just an update, I bought the bike last Saturday.

Rode it Sunday at a local MX Track that has trails, and had a blast. (TNT Motorsports-SC)

So far I'm a happy camper.

Lot's of inquiry's here as to "what is that thing"?

Taffy was on the money about the difference between the Yamaha and it, it's a little less on power which is fine by me, as my skills are no where close to its potential...it does take a lot less out of me in term of steering it however. I don't have to man-handle it like the Yamaha. That means more riding, which is a good thing.

Learned some interesting things on how to kick it over consistently(no e-start on this one), had it down by the end of the day. (hot or cold)

The suspension seemed a little "springy" on the rear shock return, but it could be my utter lack of riding skill, so before I go messing around with the rebound dampning I'll work on my skills a bit more and see if anything changes.

Glad to hear you are one of the Family

First off on the rear suspension : set the sag. I am not sure on the older bergs but start at 100mm or 4" that will get you close
Then play with the clickers in small amounts be sure to record where you started from so you can go back

if you sit/unfit a lot or you're old like me, you will get launched. so wind up the rebound. for those that can 'stand it' then the rebound was probably on the money.

Go to the factory Husaberg websight and look in the archived downloads. Might be able to download owners, parts, or service manuals there. Keep the oil changed and adjust the valves and you will be happy.

Check the dealer list. There should be one fairly close to you. The local dealer I deal with is Fun Cycles witch is located in Valdese, NC. I own a 96 FE 501 and welcome to the site.
