Hello everybody,

I'm looking for a table that shows WP shock spring part numbers and their corresponding weight (straight rate). I've searched around and can't find what I'm looking for.

I bought an '8.8' spring off eBay and it showed up marked 250-80. I'm 99% sure that it is an 8.0 kg/mm spring and should've been marked 250-88 if it was an 8.8. The seller is convinced that it's an 8.8 because that's what his KTM manual says it came with. So I'm looking for documentation that will erase my last doubt and hopefully convince him.

Thanks,

Jim

KTM manuals are notorious for wrong information. If it says 250-80, thats what I would go by.

RE: Re: Part number

he's sold you a pup mate and he's totally out of order doing it!

if it says cambell's soup on the can it isn't heinz is it?

send it back. you have an 80. forget the manual or him infact he's just covering his arse.

you must be the guy abround the corner from froggy? do you know splat?

good luck at UHE.

Taffy

Thanks for the replies guys, and confirming that I now have two 8.0 springs. I'm still looking around for some printed information to help convince the guy. He's being a little stubborn. I sent an e-mail to WP.

Taffy, I do indeed live in the same area as LeFrog. I don't know if I've met Splat or not. Since I've had the Berg I've met a few others on the trail, but I'm not sure who's who.

The UHE site has been a great source of information since my purchase.

What year and model of KTM did he say it came off? The '04 four-strokes (exc/mxc) had 8.8 stock springs. Before that, they were progressive, and after were 8.0.

He's saying it came off an 05 525SX. He sent me links to the Mx-Tech and RaceTech websites that say that bike came with an 8.8. I'm trying to convince him that what really matters is the number on the spring that says its an 8.0.

Jim

you have to be some kind of prat to believe that if it says 8.0 i have an 8.8 ? ask for your money back. if you're anywhere near a suspension shop, a good shop, ask if they will measure it's strength for free.

you'll win that argument i'm sure.

i've spent two days in mesa. brian is splat's name and he put me up for the 2005 force ride.

are you coming?

good luck

Taffy

He came around and is refunding the money. The WP distributor in the UK helped push it along.

I'd like to make the Moab ride and put some faces with names, but it's too far ahead for me to commit. It's definitely on my mind.

Hey Jim, nice to see you thinking about it!

We need more people in the convoy from Phoenix. Sandskipper, make up your mind!

Hi cse
88 stands for spring rate in newton meter 250 stands for lenght of spring in mm
if you had double begining number ( 76-95 260) then it would be progressive spring
starting at 76NM and ending at 95NM
the other way to guage a spring is to measure diameter of spring stock and coil pitch
example 84 250 = 13.25mm spring stock dia. ~35mm pitch so if your springs measures
differently between the two springs you would know which is the heavier spring
hopefully this helps

Taffy, I'm assuming that first sentence means that you know Mr. Harris at the WP distributor. I haven't passed along the whole story to him, but his single e-mail was a big help.

Thanks for the feedback Viking. Fortunately the guy has come around and returned my money. Are the pitch and wire diameters that you quoted published somewhere, or is that from your own experience?

Jim

yes i know kevin

he's only been the WP importer for a year. he also calls himself 'full travel'. he tuned my rear shock and my forks. did the shock two seasons ago and ditto the forks. didn't like what i had and when i split the forks i found the shim stacks were standard 2004 fayre. not a happy bunny!

then you mention things like "do you stock 23mm MV shims" and you get a shocked look. i don't know how he's got where he has. it's either that or the man keeps his lights hidden under a bushel.

Hi cse
those figures are from my 07 84 -250 spring just small change dia or pitch changes
spring rate, personally I am too keen on straight rate springs for Husaberg and WP
progressive springs is not stiff enough at the end

VIKING

Thanks Viking. I've read quite a bit about progressive vs. straight rate and I've decided to try the 8.8 straight. We'll see how it works out.

Jim

cse keep in mind that what said / written pertains to KTM bottom line what works for
KTM does not necessarily work for Husaberg since the angle and ratio are opposite
Grant langston racing makes super progressive spring but I don't know anything more

VIKING

Per

"super progressive" what do you mean by that?

9-11.5 with WP is that 9-13 or 9-10?

there has been a thread recently dragged up on ktalk about terry hay modifying springs to make them progressive. quite interesting...

regards

Taffy

Taffy
super progressive is of course Langston racings claim but I would imagine that it would
start out ~75NM and would end above 105/110NM maybe more looking at the pics of
the spring it has a healthy pitch on the bottom one other thing about spring rate is
where rear axle is on the adjustment slot example if the axle is at beginning of slot
and you achieve static sag and rider sag with 84-250 spring if now had the axle at the
end of adjustment slot you would need a 88 -250 spring to achieve the same sag
it is law of mechanical leverage as consequence of that your rebound has changed
