overheating 04 fe450

Fitted husaberg dealer supplied radiator guards for protection and bike started to overheat (boiling, losing water)

Removed them and bike stopped overheating. Bike has done 1800 ks. There was an o-ring missing on oil filter cap! from new. Potential oil bypassing filter. Electric Start struggles a bit. Other than that great bike.

ditto above plus note that viking has gone to CRF louvres in the front. viking also has a tip on the radiator cap so why not visit his gallery?

welcome on board mate and hope you enjoy it here. please put in where you're from and what you ride. it really, really helps!

As the topic header states, he rides an 04 FE450.

I have the BOSS guards on my rads, ride the same bike and I'm having boil over on almost every ride. I can understand when I ride up to 10000' from 4000' but when I don't gain much elev., take gnarly hill climbs or run tight trails in 1st gear, I'm still puzzled. I've switched to engine ice and made an overflow bottle to recover the coolant but it still shoots out the vents in the bottle when hot.

I see what Viking is saying with the pics in his gallery and in previous posts, but I haven't seen or read what he's done about the hose nip inside the radiator causing false overheat.

My 2005 FE-550 has never boiled over once and I installed BOSS radiator guards a long time ago. From desert runs to tight trails, no problem. I've never even added fluid to the radiator. I wonder if it might be as simple as lean factory jetting? Dan at Motoexotica rejetted my bike before I ever picked it up. All I've done in the last year is change oil & filter, replace worn tires and put gas in her.

I bought the bike from NMS in Sparks, NV they re-jetted the bike for that area, very similar in elevation to Bishop, CA. I'm not stating the BOSS guards are the problem. I don't know what the problem is. I always check my coolant and top off a few ozs. about every other ride.

Overheating Husa

I had some overheatig problems (12 hours on a 07 fe650e) so I took out the thermostat and plugged the bypass tube so coolant flows directly now. Don't know how it runs but will find out this weekend in 35 celcius conditions. Got to get the fan kit.

all of my cooling problems were directly related to not bleeding system good enough, I bled once @ the motor and a ton of air came out so I thought I was good. NOT!!!!!! Try bleeding 3 or 4 more times, I did this and it fixed my bike, got a little more air out every time. I bled it slightly warm with rad cap on, So give it a try and let me know what your results R

Hi Hambergler
that plastic nipple ( see my gallery ) is very good potential for overheating
if that plastic nipple get pushed in ever so slightly it will cause the rad cap to release
pressure prematurely and that lowers the boiling temp a recovery tank is a good thing
to have because it keeps the rad full at all cooling system temperatures increasing the
efficiency of the radiator

so long VIKING

I'm on it! Bleed...bleed...bleed! I only bled once after putting in engine ice.

Anyone tried Two2Cool?

I tried it after my bike boiled over one time, I never had a boil over again.
Hard to say if it's the product as I never duplicated the conditions.

I had to replace it for the winter though as it was only good to -13°c

What´s this bleeding thing? How do I do it?

I´ve got an 501 ´01

Boheme
the bleeding thing does not pertain to your bike, on 04 and newer bikes there is a bleed
screw in the head (on left side) where you can bleed trapped air

I had struggled with overheating/boiling over problems on a 05 450fe with either the BOSS rad guards and the stock guards for quite some time. I recently richened the jetting, switched to using engine ice coolant, and installed two PC fans on a toggle. I'm not sure what the fix was for sure, but I think the fans where the ticket. I can now do single track trails that I used to dread taking without a problem.

ok, that´s why I don´t know about it...

what a shame, my bike quite easily overheatens, I thought of this a possible solution...

Thanks Viking!

you can still bleed the earlier heads. if you look between the two exhaust ports, you'll see a tiny grub screw. start your bike, get it warm, undo this screw.
