overheat and bad crash ?

Hello All,

Here it is:
1. Going to do a oil change. I start the bike and wife calls me for a phone call. I get involved in a work call and 15-20 min. later remember bike was running. OVERHEATED TO THE POINT WATER WAS COMING OUT OVERFLOW. When I did the oil change the magnet which had been clean the last 2 oil changes (300 miles) looked like a Christmas tree of shavings . Also some aluminum specs on the screen. (100) mile next oil change magnet still looked pretty bad but no aluminum shavings.

A couple of weeks later a old friend asked me to go on a poker run. I signed up for a 40 mile course no 42 year old with fake hips and 300lbs should NEVER of dreamed of. I broke off the new kickstand-bent the handle bars and broke shifter off.

I thought I may have a cooling problem but the race had no overheating problems.

Since the hips will take about 2 months to get back in place and my stupid over heating mistake I am now tearing down the bike a little while I heal.

I have it down to the frame motor and swing arm.
I plan to replace the hoses and the front steering bearings that were shot.

I NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU MECHANICS WOULD DO FROM HERE?

WHAT DO YOU THINK I DID IN THE OVERHEAT MISTAKE TO CAUSE THE METAL FLAKES?

I HAVE ABOUT 5000 FLAWLESS MILES SINCE BOSS REBUILT IT.

You got it this far, pull the motor, check the top end. You should have that motor out in 10 minutes!

Its a 2006 fe 450.

When I pull the top end what should I look for?

damage? or just wear on certain items?

Remember I am just learning about mechanical operations. I have decided try and repair or maintain a combustion vehicle at age 42. It has been rewarding and this site has guided me through 3 issues that I normally would have been terrified to attempt. I always have Boss 10 min. away if I get in trouble.

Thanks
Mike

My guess is you are going to find a worn timing chain causing most of the metal issues at that mileage. Possibly coincidence to the overheat.
One thing I found about the bergs is that they are very resiliant to overheating.
At 5K I think you will want to change the chain, rockers and cam bearings. Inspect the cylinder bore for any abnormal scoring or wear. Once you get the clutch cover off you should get a pretty good feel for bearing wear or issues.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks, just the kind of info I am looking for.

I received information that Rick at Boss was pretty exhausted after his journey and race.

I will call him for parts $ I have a $500 budget right now so I would like to go for what would cause the most damage if it breaks replaced then move down the list.

I found a guy who was selling a seat cover on graigslist that also had a new front steering bearing kit for my year.

funny thing I offered to buy the seat cover also but he sent me the bearing and a refund for the seat cover. anyway he wanted $30 for both and sent me back $20 with the bearings and seals. Anyone know what the bearings and seals cost retail$. Oh yea I paid $7 shipping.

Thanks Mike

Also, One of the reasons I thought I might have damaged something in the cooling when I overheated.

The morning of the poker run ride I notice that the coolant level was down after I started it. I put the coolant in as normal but when I opened the bleeder screw it didn't seem to have that steady flow out that I normaly viewed. It did not have any overheating issues during the ride of about 40 miles before Armageddon?
