Last weekend while riding my 04 450 FE would not stop overheating even
while running fairly flat 2nd/ 3rd gear wich I thought where not normal
after the boiling had stopped I carefully open the radiator cap only to get a hiss bad rad cap I thought well back home I pressure tested the radiator with rad cap installed in radiator pressure released at 25 psi and
opening the rad cap would be loud hiss too make long story short what I
found was that overflow hose nipple on radiator (wich is plastic) had been pushed in slightly probably by installing overflow hose that made the rad cap not seal very good it would release at 12psi BINGO problem solved
the fix is easy simply counter hold nipple with screwdriver while you push on overflow hose and be sure that is hose is on all the way to the aluminium that way nipple go inwards and interfere with rad cap I would
think that this is common problem

Hello Taffy,
Apparently english is a second language to all of us yanks. I understood the post completly.
Now you know how I feel whenever you post anything even remotely technical.....I just sit there scratching my head and muttering to myself :D

Hi Taffy,

I understood the post the first time through. I had the same problem with the plastic over flow nipple on my 00 berg, and fixed if using some JB weld.

Regards,

Joe

Hey Taffy, try cruising the forum before a couple of pints!

Correct me if I'm wrong... but isn't the overflow nipple above the lower sealing surface of the pressure cap? The cap has to open at it's rated pressure in order to allow coolant to even get to the overflow nipple. How could the mentioned fix help?

I dont really have an answer on that Steve. I do know that I have 2 radiators that leak from that nipple. I had considered epoxy but opted out of it's use. Right now the combination of a little RTV and only filling the radiator up to 10mm over the core seems to have helped. I had always filled the radiator up to the top. I think that contributed to most of the leaking.

Hi Taffy maybe you should in Husaberg heritage make your reply in Swedish which happens to be my first language its only a click away
on the UHE menu Good luck
Hi volvonut I cant tell you exactly what interfered but pressure test where
conclusive and easily duplicated

i think what he is saying is that the nipple is moving in touching the spring or pushing into the coils so that the full spring load is not getting to the seal , the post was very clear and was only read twice after reading taffys post , i could not see a problem

Well nothing like real test ride in step mountains and 95`F (32`C) not a
drop lost it ran cool other brands where not as fortunate I am thrilled to
have finally solved sometimes overheating and other times OK

I had that same problem with the over flow nipple  fouling the cap. Basically what I was the same as what you did. With the cap off I held the plastic in flush while I pushed the over flow hose on. The plastic part interferes with the operation of the cap as in opening and closing because it sticks inward just enough to foul everything up. Good luck with your over heating problem. Hope it helps.
