first bit of sunshine out for a blast and bang!!!
it looks as though the small bolt in cam chain sprocket sheared and got caught in chain and pushed chain up through rocker cover
has anyone known of this before ?
can i leave bolt out ? does sprocket bolt not do same job
oh well i was kind of looking forward to seeing all its internals
before it went bang it was burning quite a bit of oil so i suppose it needed attention
what do i need to look at for oil burning ? valves\guides , rings?
looks like a trip to DCR coming up

02 650 by the way

Hi Jonnieboy,
From your description, you are talking about the de compressor stop bolt yes? If so, you are not alone. There are many Berg and a lot more KTM owners who have had this problem happen.
From my understanding, they normally come loose or shear due to coming loose. This is due to constant impact from the decompressor weight. The best advice I have had on keeping these things tight came from a Berg dealer.

His advice was to forget the nylocks, forget the loctite. When you replace the bolt and nut, simply peen the back of the bolt tightly onto the nut. As he told me, that will never come undone. Remember, this is a long time Berg dealers advice, not mine.
We have since applied this "technology" to any Berg or RFS we have apart, and have not had an issue with any done in this way
As for the oil consumption, you have pretty much answered your own question. If it is excessive, remove, dismantle, inspect, replace as required. The vertical split Bergs are a snap to work on, simplicity plus.

and anyone else

if you have a genuine mod to a very real problem feel free to make sure it goes in the 'owners doc' you also get the credit for coming up with the idea (in italics!)!!!!

so ausberg, please, as requested, feel free to download the sheet, make modifications and additions and then highlight in red and post back to me.

find the doc at the foot of this post.

Nowthen Jonnieboy
Hope you get it sorted.
You probably know Mark at NTB, he's usually very good with that kind of repair, if you didn't fancy doing it yourself.
I'm seeing him tomorrow actually, his number is 01904 750101

update time
first of all computers are crap had loads of bother but now its sorted

the heads getting repaired the cam chain tensioner pivoit took a whack
should be done tomorrow

rocker cover is on its way

as for oil consumption bore has nasty grooves but its not completely stripped as i cant get flywheel off till i can get to dcr for a proper puller my 3 jaw one wont do it
so looks as though its gonna be a major rebuild oh deep joy
will just go over to dcr when the cover is in with lots of bits and just cry and hand over plastic
is liner wear common ?

ausberg
cheers for info ive been told that newer sprockets dont have bolt in its part of sprocket will probably go for that option
how near to pinnaroo are you we spent some time near there a couple of years ago
ady
yeah been a couple of times seems a decent fella but i like to do me own work as much as i can must be the tight yorkshire thing

ok Jonnieboy
Good luck with it all.
The True Grit at Lings Farm was hard work, so you didn't miss out on a nice race. Presuming you would have raced of course.

Hey Johnnieboy!
Good to hear you are getting it sorted. I also understand later cam sprockets have a solid stop as opposed to the bolt for the decompressor unit that the earlier bikes have.
Pinnaroo? was there yesterday. Only 100 klms/ 45mins from my place.
You then then fully understand the sort of country we ride in. Sand, sand and more sand.
Good Luck with your bike( and your computer)
Cheers!!!
AUSBERG.

jonnieboy, dont fancy coming on our ride in july do you? merv, you are spending a lot of time online?

would love to come back we spent 2 months on a farm near parilla
on christmas day we found some bikes in their sheds ended up getting a honda mt250??? (we never had them over here )going so ended up riding round farm on that
farmer keeps in touch and always says there a job and house anytime we want

how far is your berg dealer then ? what few folk with bikes we saw raved on about xr's but they were farmers and they do have things about tractors i suppose
by the time ive rebuilt bike ill be skint again and the fact wed have to have 4 seats on the plane now means ill have to give it a miss this time but if the lottery comes my way ill deffo be over
dont seem to recall to many good roads for supermoto out there thou not like my playground over here

 phoned alex at dcr today and hes had an email off berg
sayin that the 02 rocker cover is not available at the moment
does this happen often ????
does anyone in uk have a spare??
i dont race or owt so its not a real drama just a bit annoying
all them bits all over the garage wish id taken more notice of what went where
its ok now rant over

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... :B:WN:UK:1

this is a link to the last item on this geezers list of bits for sale. it fiinished yesterday. you can however ask him a question.

he had a rocker cover for sale last week. he had EVERYTHING for sale last week!

only the big dealers are likely to have one and i would say they are;

SR off-road
gary grover
s & s
DCR

and that's it i think?

cheers taffy will have a ring round tomorow

got head back today welded and machined where cam chain guide took a hit it looks areally good job well pleased

i had the same thing done to my head last month. i had the chain guide try and de-root everything also. it ripped the bolt clean out of the head so we bonded it back in with the aid of a nut 'n bolt.
