Its official.
For those that try their e-start on pre 04 models and the battery struggles to turn over the engine particularly on compression stroke - this is the cure.

Quite simply you fit the 04 auto decomp device to your older model bike and ensure your valves are correct.
part number 590.36.016.000
Mine is the 03 501 FE its an official cure and Dave Clark Racing have confirmed it... see below :-

Hello Ady,

The Auto De-Co device is the one from the 2004 machine (Which is the same for every engine size). It was Gary Grover that put me on to the idea of using it in the older machines.

I am glad that you are happy with the service that I provide. It does help if my customers can include Part Numbers (Available on www.husaberg.cc) like you have done. It is also easier to deal with parts inquiries via email. I normally can answer email requests within 24 hours.
Thank you again for your vote of confidence.

Regards
Alex

I found something very very interesting regarding this part.

Check it out.

It seems to also be a KTM part (which means lower price, woohoo).

There is also a thread about this part.

As I need to do some serious work in this area, I am also considering the upgrade as well.

If it helps, I am running all 05 valve train in my 02 and have had very good luck with that. I have checked my valve clearances regularly and have only needed minor adjustments. The auto decomp has also been trouble free, I use good oil and change it often. Just my 2cents.

I hope you have better luck with those parts than I did. Both my 04 and 06 struggle to turn over on the compression stroke. Both bikes right out of the crates.
Both bikes need to be "cheated" with the manual decompressor to start most of the time.

One change that the 07 models have is a new valve cover, claiming to allow higher RPM through increased stiffness.Has it ever been discussed here that possibly the problems experienced with rocker bearings, valve adjustment frequency etc in 01-03 were due to a rocker cover with insufficient thickness causing flex....just a thought.

NSman

therefore they've known about these problems for quite a while because they used to have a bridge down the middle of the rocker inspection entry area and then removed it for the '02 year if i remember rightly?

that REALLY helped!!!

Berger Sir
From what ive gathered the 04 autodecomp is only the cure for the 03, 02 and 01 engines and possibly earlier, but not for the 04 itself and onwards, due to its weight shape and profile favouring earlier models.
Sorry mate
To anyone reading this, Valves must be right !! As Taffy sais in the Doc, release the little spring on the manual decomp arm and lift valves to check its flat to the exhaust rocker, then adjust.

Just FYI I have always heard that for legacy bikes to start well on the button, the valvles need to be a bit tighter than oem spec. and hav found it to be true on mine.

Ady

where does this info come from and also can you answer the question about the part numbers yyou quoted?

if you want to be mentioned in the immortal tomb of work you really must try harder!

Hi Taffy
Yeah, basically in the parts book for my bike it gives :-
200 274-01 aut. decomp device 400/501/550 01- but it also gives another option underneath, as follows:-
200 306-01 aut. decomp device 650 03 -
As i had heard that the 650 one works better i asked DCR to send whichever one they thought was best.
When it arrived in a KTM box with a number i didnt recognise, i also noted it was not the same as the one i took out, so i presumed it was the 650 one.
I then checked with Alex at DCR and he informed me it was the 04 one, with the new part number and that it was something they had been doing as a modification for some time.... My last email from Alex confirming that.
.... How's that for homework Taff ?? ....

Ady

HA-HA!

MMMM!

NOT BAD - I SUPPOSE!

i'll fit it in ASAP!

Ok, Ady, I ordered the part, I will let you know.

I just have to loosen the chain to remove the whole camshaft and timing wheel assembly? I guess one has to make sure to put it all back so as not to lose the timing?

Froggy

get berger up for the cam timing. it's clearly explained but it really is 'in the eye' to get it right. even if you're a tooth out - it'll run but it's not a good start!

FOR THOSE INTERESTED

Maddel and i have again put loads of work into the doc. right now we are trawling the gallery and have only got as far as 'C' as we try and upload good photos that explain what we say. Sandpiper's excellent photos on the stator have been added.

also sparks is running through the electrical section and checking wether w're up to speed there. i'm not good on electrics so i'm trusting steve and bundybear to make me look good here!

lots of tiny items are being added but i'll soon have to start knocking my new house around and it'll all have to wait again. we're all volunteers at the end of the day!

a new section has been added:
10: RESTORE

this i'll try and put stuff in and the title speaks for itself. in the meantime some other titles may disappear as they are overlapping and a bit hazy.

OYK
has volunteered to do a complete chapter on the pre 2001 bergs. i'm guessing that he's not getting on too well but i hope i'm wrong.

CAN'T ANY OF YOU HELP? sometimes it's just mental support. if you get worn out with it and come home to a message saying "look at this link it ha lots of info" it IS a big 'pick-me-up!'.

parsko?

can't believe how lazy some of you are..... and BTW, i don't know anything about pre '01s so you'd be on your own with no interference from me. in the meantime maddel is uploading and doing a brilliant job.

a german and a brit running the doc and a greek starting the older bikes section. helped in the electrics by a brit from spain and an aussie. anybody see what i'm saying here?

regards

Taffy

what are you saying, americans are lazy?!

honestly, if I knew my *** from a hole in the ground with any real sense of surety I would contribute. sorry taff

Taffy, I think the name is Sandskipper and he's a cool guy :)

I can help with a segment of the alphabet if you want.

As for the timing thing, I'd hate to depend on Berger yet again, he bailed me out a few weeks ago (I did not advertise it but I broke a bolt on the side case and he drilled it out and rethreaded it, I owe him a big one) and I really try to not depend on anyone.

It seems that I make many mistakes but that's how you learn. Only one way to learn that fire burns, again.

Do you want me to inspect a certain segment of the alphabet in the gallery?

froggy

i'll take on the photo thing mate as it ties up with the technical articles but thanks all the same. i think we have 16 photos just from the gallery members that are A - C. so many more to follow.

i'd love to replace all mine as they look awful compared to some really technical photoshop type stuff that's there.

yes it was a slip - sandskipper's photos.

risky
not saying that your lazy but that we are undersupported by americans yes. canadians need to get off their arses as well!

and as for the land that brought us the bikes well.........

regards

Taffy

I haven't had my 99 for long and have only done minor repairs so I can't offer anything at this stage. I can see the amount of work that has gone into the doc's but the pre 01's are short on info. Others must have knowledge about problems and part interchangeability. I think the Stator findings from SParks might cover the earlier models.
