oiling of air filter

Those using petrol to clean faom filters are taking a risk...... it expands the cells of the foam (which is why the filters "grow" a little when washed). The bugger is that its a very quick and easy way to strip all the dirt/oils out of the foam, but it wreaks the foam....... Its ok for jappers or your m8s bike but if you luv ya Berg then turps is a lot more mild.
Personnaly I use Motul products (300v ina mota, and Motul filter oil ona filta). There are certainly cheaper products but I have tested Motul under sum extreme conditions and it WERX.
Air filters are cheap compared to motors.
Any motor servicers got an opine?
We have used petrol for many years to clean . The lodgic here would be that the filter oils are made of a petrol product and will disipate with petrol as the solvent. I believe that most foam filters are made of petrol resistant foam. We use a pan of petrol (gasoline) and soak and adjitate dirty side down to remove dirt and filter oil. We then use a vaporiser gun with compressed air to remove and clean the remaining small crud. Let air dry (preferably outside with a little breeze). It only takes about 10 minutes to dry completely and ready for filter oil. The filters look and feel like brand new with no known foam break down. Have never ruined a motor from dirt and the intake tracks are always spotless clean. JMHO

even has a funky keyboard soundtrack in there somewhere ! oooh yeah thats it baby  , just needs sunnies and a gold chain

deisel does wreck some of the filters, petrol is usually OK, I like the Turps, sugarcane moonshine might work too but its on the top shelf

I meant that I wash the crud off with kero then nice warm detergent bath followed by sun drying and then hit it with the oil, glad I could amuse you bushie...

Hi Steve, thanks for the Turps tip.
Hi Berglsmerg, thanks for the warm detergent bath tip.

I used Turps first then warm detergent bath and the air filters came out sparking clean in no time.

What do you guys oil the filters with? I've got some Amsoil and K&N foam filter oil around. Both pretty sticky stuff, maybe too sticky. What do you guys think of the No Toil air filter stuff? Twin Air (Motorex) stuff?

I am surprised to read some post here that are still using the old school method of "Petrol - Turps - Kero'

Each to their own method, but I was taught that this is WAY TO HARSH on the filters and will do damage to the foam. If it works for you and you like it ........?

I buy cans of cheap and nasty (NON mineral based) spray on de greaser. I spray the filter foam and massage in well. Then it's just a matter of rinsing on warm water, then washing in CT18 truck wash, again rinse in warm water. Then I use my air hose and blow all the water out (Hate waiting for it to dry in the sun). Once it's nice and dry I then immerse the whole filter in liquid filter oil and then squeeze out ALL the excess. It then ready to use.

Someone here posted that cleaning filters sucks ? It's part of living with your bike. Any time with my bike (riding or maintenance) is easy time. Sitting in the shed, music on, beer in hand, son by my side learning, that's what its all about !

That's me :D :D :D
And I have the shed (Triple Garage), music, Beer (+ Husaberg Beer Cooler thanks Json), and 3 little sons.
It was a breeze using Turps last night compared to Motorex Air Filter Cleaner. The Motorex Air Filter Oil seems to be OK but the Motorex Air Filter Cleaner just doesn’t seem to work.

It doesn't get better than that. :D

a bloke was showing me a PJ1 product... foam filter wash. spray onto dirty filter and wash off with cold water. Filter came out nice and clean and real easy. The downside is the $20 a can and 3 or 4 filters per can. Didnt expand the foam like petrol but looked just as clean.
