Oil to wp suspension

Hey.
I have A Husaberg Fe 501 from 2000. And I have A problem!
All the oil in my rear damper is gone. I think the reason is A leak in the bush or the seals. So my question is, what oil can I use? Is it A special oil or can I use the same as the fork (SAE 5). I live in Europe so if there is anyone there know where I can buy some seals, oil and bushings I will bee glad to know!
Thanks

Hi Rasmus
It is not advisable to use fork oil in your shock- unless you know your fork oils. :?
.
Reason being that oil designed specifically for forks generally has a low V.I. (viscosity index) which means that as it heats up its viscosity changes dramatically, and your suspension behaves much differently between a cold and hot shock.

Forks are not subject to the temps a shock endures.

There are some fork oils that have high V.I.s that can do both fork and shock useage, but its a matter of knowing whats what.

Heres a link that explains all about it, as well as listing all the manufacturers true viscositys and V.I.s so you can select a suitable fluid, the chart at the page end being very useful.

I live in Denmark (Aarhus). I have seen the manual for the rear shock. But it didnt specify what oil need'ed. It say's A special WP oil!!! But can I do it, without the special tools?? Or do I need to send it to A specialist?
Thanks

Hi Rasmus,

what you need is specific damper oil, the fork oil doesn´t work.
It doesn´t need to be the WP-oil, you can use shock-oil from another brands (eg.öhlins, motul, or whatever you have easy acces on)

If you´re mechanically skilled, it should be no big deal to change to oil by yourself, BUT: you´re not done yet! :(
you need to pressurize your shock with nitrogen - this can´t be done at home
My advise:sent it to specialist and let him to the "overhaul" - if the shock is "open" he can also revalve it to your specific needs

Hope I could help you

here are some german-links, you need to google yourself more into details

Rasmus,

If you only plan on doing it once to get your bike back in action, my advice is to take it to a specialist.Much less headache.

If you plan on doing your own rebuilds/services at regular intervals and maybe some for friends, then its worth sourcing/making the correct tools.

I do my shocks "at home", but I never would have gone to the trouble of sourcing/making the required tools for a once of rebuild.

I service my shock 2- 3 times a year on average, so I considered it worthwile "tooling up" to do so.

A well known WP tuner recommended fluid of 15.2 cs t @40C for PDS useage, but its V.I. is a bit lower than some recommend, so Im looking for a fluid with similar viscosity but better V.I when my current supply runs out.

Being an oil related? issue, no doubt others will have their own recommendations too.
