Oil Screen Question

Geeez--Not thinking (which seems to be an everyday occurance anymore) it mattered I did not notice which end of the oil screen faced in or out. After cleaning and inspection I found the screen to have a consistent OD as opposed to a taper of the ID. Logic tells me narrower ID end facing out against plug. Can anyone explain what the purpose of the ID taper is and which end goes where?

Cota,

IMHO, the inside taper of the screen tube maintains more even flow through the entire screen then it would if it were not tapered. This improves filtering of the oil. Have you ever seen the oil screen on a 40's or 50's car? Little if any thought was given to that in those days. In artic weather, you could suck a hole through the oil right at the oil pump intake on start up! This would cause the pump to pump air instead of oil because the oil was so thick in would not flow fast enough into a small area of the screen without the screen assembly tube being designed to force flow to occurr over the entire screen.

The small I.D. goes inside the cap as you already figured.

Regards,

Joe
