oil rings and piston groove

few months ago i bought a new wossner piston for my 95 fe 600.
i ordered it by a wossner dealer not from my husaberg dealer-the price was 100e down.

there is a chance that the piston is faulty, the oil rings and the piston groove for them might be different.

i just want to know exactly what the middle part of the oil rings do.
i mean the spring between the 2 oil rings.
how the 3 parts work together ?
does this spring type ring forces the 2 rings at the top and the bottom of the groove?

it may be a silly question but any how i would like to know so as to make sure that my piston is faulty.

thanks in advance

Hello Oyk,

If the ring set you have looks like the one below, then you are O.K. if you install it correctly.

The spring has up and down fingers that push on the inside diameter of the scraper rings, and it also has a center shelf that supports the top and bottom scraper rings to maintain the proper fit in the ring groove.. So the spring does both, it presses the oil scraper rings against the cylinder wall and maintains the proper top to bottom of groove clearance.

The OEM piston had 'ASSO-WERKE 2874' cast into the underside of the crown.

Joe

thank for your reply joeusa, it was very helpfull and clear :)

i must be cursed, i can't explain it otherwise...
either i was sent the wrong set of rings either the CNC guy at the wossner factory was dead drunk when he made the oil rings groove.....

the spring type ring on the above photos, is nothing like the one included in my piston kit.

there is about 0.5mm of play up and down of the rings inside the groove when they are put together.

a husaberg mechanic told me either the groove's width is wrong (bigger) or the rings are not the right ones.

oh i feel so lucky

i have had 2 /95 mm wossner pistons installed in husabergs of your approx vintage that were heavy smokers once installed. one guy returned the piston the other guy had some rings made up by total seal.he said the oil ring was not right,i cant remember the exact dimensions at this time but he knew what he was talking about.i have sold lots of those pistons and have had only two problems so i am not going to condem them just yet.dan.

well motoxotica, the oil rings groove has 4 mm width and in my case the total thickness of the 2 oil rings + the scrapper ring is 3.5mm.

so there is a 0.5mm of play inside the groove.this play allows oil to enter the combustion chamber through the 3 lubrication purposed holes in the oil groove.these holes are covered by the oil rings IF they are the right ones but in my case the holes just lead the oil above the rings.

what i did for a quick repair until i order new rings, is to put an extra oil ring from a 95mm piston made for a yamaha xt 600, that totaly solved the problem.

i shall contact wossner to see what they can do to assist me(actually i will ask for a free set of rings).

so everyone should be carefull with this issue if intend to install a new wossner......it is really annoying...
