Oil return line screen/strainer?

I changed my oil for the first time this last weekend, I pulled the oil screen out of the bottom by the oil drain plug apart and cleaned it out.

So when I got the oil return screen/strainer out I pulled it apart, I discovered there isn't any O-rings on it. So I figure that it isn't suppose to come apart? I looked in the spare parts manual book and seen that its sold as one piece. So I have a couple on order.

My question is can that piece that I pulled out, come out and get in the motor or is it trapped and not able to move once its in place? I'm not sure if its glued in there from the factory or not? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

The part I am talking about is on page 20 in the spare parts manual for the engine. Its fig#55 and part number 81238016000.

Thanks for any and all help, Jim

I pulled the 2 strainers out and cleaned them:
1. The Banjo Bolt Oil Strainer off the Head. This seems to be held in via little hooks that click into the Banjo side holes.
2. The Oil Stranier in the Drian Plug at the bottom of the engine. This is clipped in and seemed hard to snap out.

I saw no glue on any of them.
My Dealer said they are OK to pull out of place, clean and put back in.

I think this is the one the OP is talking about, that screen can be put in two ways, the one way its like there is nothing holding it in. The other there is three little hooks that clip into the three holes on the side of the actual banjo bolt its self. The first couple oil changes I did on my 390 and I've put the screen back in the wrong way with no harm.

When put in the correct way, the oil is forced through the screen twice, the wrong way only once.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help guys, I figured it could come out and be put back in but I wasnt sure and havent read anywhere that you could or couldnt.

Yes the screen in the Banjo bolt is easy to put back in the wrong way. The owners manual should have a better picture of the screen showing which way to put it back in.
Both my screens looked pretty clean, I couldn't really see anything in them. I am tempted to not even check them next few oil changes. Anyone else not checking them each oil change?

Have a 2010 FE 390 and love it. Changed oil recently and did not pay attention to how the oil screen in the Banjo bolt goes in. One end of the screen is closed and the other open. I read that the small clips go into the banjo bolt and help secure the screen. Since the screen is open on the end near the clips and closed on the other end, I am paranoid that I may put it in backwards. Please verify that the open end of screen inserts into the banjo bolt. THANKS !!!!!! Bonus points if you educate me on why it is designed that way. :)

I'm new here and new to my '10 390, but to answer the question above, using what i under stand of the oil path, the oil return line is bringing oil back from the top end of the engine. If there is any debris in the oil as it flows back the screen will act like a strainer basket and catch particles as they flow into the lower engine and hold them there waiting for the next time you clean them out. The flow of the oil is one way, and so the particles are basically trapped there until removed on an oil change, thereby protecting the internal components of the engine.

If I'm wrong, please chime in and correct me on this.
I'm probably going to attempt my first oil change / screen cleaning (on this bike) tomorrow.
