Went out for ride before and noticed there was no oil in oil window. Meant to be at top when engine is hot, but it didnt even show near the bottom.

So in a panic i dropped the oil and there was 750ml in it. Is this enough? I topped it up with 800ml plus a splash for luck. Last time i changed it i put 750 in and it always showed in the oil window. Checking it with the bike in exactly the same spot aswell.

Also, is it ok to use putoline 10/50 instead of /40? Got a lot of oil off the lad i bought it off, but its all 50

10/50 is a better oil than a 10/40 so you're alright there. it takews 900cc to get the oil level right so I don't know how you made 750 come good the first time but then you were hit by reality the second time. classic mistake is to do it one time on the paddock stand and the next on its wheels.

Oh sugar :(
I didnt change the filter though, i thought it were 100mm less if the filter wasnt done. Ive got the Doc downloaded and read somewhere that Husaberg had revised the oil level to a lower amount, or have i been drinkin too much?
Hope ive not done any ruddy damage running it low. Not done that many miles but have revved the nuts off. There wasnt very much shrapnel on the plug.

Just like the arm pulling off sensation these beasts create :)

Right, ive just checked oil levels when engine is cold. Berg is on shed floor which is 100% level (cos i built it...) The berg is 100% ish plumb, and the oil level window is a 1/4 full... thats with 800ml in. Im beginning to think my oil jug might be telling lies. They were 3 for a pound from home bargains

if I kick my bike over 20-30 times after I drop the oil and then wait 15 min and do it again it takes about 1.2L to get 1/2 way up the glass with the engine level. you "pump" most of the oil out of the crank area this way.

takes a few goes but you learn a drill for your bike after a while.

At the risk of changing the subject, I don't believe this is necessarily so, depends, and a sweeping statement like this is, I believe, misleading.

Sorry Taff
Steve

well Steve I believe it to be right. They both start as 10 weight and the oils viscosity when warm will be that of a 50W and not a 40W which is better. the wider the numbers the better the quality of the oil.

a 10/40 is bettered by a 10/50 and a 10/50 is bettered by a 10/60? that's my take on it. it's the ability of the oil to 'hang in there' that they are marking?

Heavier oil makes the clutch plates stick on startup and the bigger molecules in heavier oil expand clearances in the engine thus making the bike dependent on the heavier oil to keep from leaking!!! BOM BOM BOOOOOOOM Lol I love online oil disagreements also DYNO VS SYN!!! BAYYMMM

If i have to continue using the 10/50 then thats no big deal. Im more concerned with gettin the correct amount in.
Im probably wrong, but i prefer to have slightly less oil in than too much, but i would prefer more to have it bob on.
If the bike takes 900ml from totally empty, then puttin 800 in should bring it right, considering about 100ml hangs around in the filter and other bits.
Alls i know is when the bike is level, the oil level at the window is correct after i put 800 in.
The 2 books ive got say add a litre though, but i have an ammendment sheet sayin Husaberg reckon its better for the engine to have it on lower mark when cold, which mine is when i put 800 in.

Im rambling now :?

Multigrades are created by adding viscosity index improvers such as poly (alkyl methacrylates) and/or polyisobutylene. These are long-chain molecules which are sensitive to shear - in other words they don't last too long. The broader the viscosity index span, the more quickly the oil is likely to degenerate.

So I believe that it is better to use oil of the narrowest viscosity span that meets your operating temperature range; use a fully-synthetic and change it and the filter/filter screens regularly.

You don't get owt for nowt!
