Oil Leaking from Rocker Cover

Hi
I have a FS650e, leaking a fair bit of oil from the front. It's coming from the cam/rocker cover gasket.
Took apart and resealed using Blue Hylomar at the weekend, it was dry as a bone but I noticed this morning it's weeping again. On closer inspection the sealant it peeling off!
Are there any tips, has anyone got this problem?
Would it be worth trying a paper gasket?

Thanks for your help, my girlfriend's going mad with oil on the patio!!!

leaky bits

see if you can get hold of some WURTH rtv silicon top stuff lot better than the hylmor stuff comes in aerosoll can 8O but top stuff sticks like foook no more leeks :D

Check the vent hose to the rocker covers. They seem to get pourous or dry rot very quickly. They will leak or weep giving the appearence of a rocker cover leak. Mine started leaking in less than a year.

try and see if you can order off there web site its about a £10 a tube , could be the breather tube like berger said also if you take the rocker cover off you
will need to check the valve gaps after

Maybe this is a dumb question, but you ARE using a paper gasket.. right?

Ah, sematics, the VALVE covers need gaskets, the ROCKER cover does not.

I use 'ThreeBond' Silicone Liquid Gasket 1211 on the Rocker Cover and the top of the Head.. Follow all of the instructions and it will not leak.

I have also had the spigot in the rocker Cover loosen and leak. It is threaded in, so if yours is leaking just screw it out , clean the threads, and put a little 1211 on it and screw it back in, tight.

Regards,

Joe

yes he means the rocker cover or the cam cover not the tappet covers or the tappet inspection covers

i know this leak well and it's got nowt to do whit bondings and resins!!!!! 8O the cover is distorted and you need to have about .003" (3 thou) skimmed off it. it wont effect much else but it will be the problem. it's usually the head that needs the skim and not the rocker cover.

Taffy

i once saw a leak between ricker cover and head after someone had stripped one of the threads, and the rocker cover was lifting a little during operation!

Have Fun

I have use both blue and grey silicone based Loctite products (cheaper than three-bond) without any problems. A gasket should not be used since this will ruin the fit of the camshaft bearings. Pay attention to the small o-ring for the oil channel (even though this is on the rear of the cylinder). Normally these type of gaskets are quite easy to peal off or rub off with the thumb after dismantling.

Taffy has it right; check for flatness of the cover. I've had same problem, and it was the cover. As Dale has mentioned in the past, the cover bolts can strip and are easily repaired by going to a 1/4"-20 (if I remember correctly), and problem solved. Best of luck. BD

SILICONE VALVE COVER GASKETS

MOTOEXOTICA NOW HAS RE-USEABLE SILICONE VALVE COVER GASKETS
USE LOCKTITE RED, SNUG TIGHTEN

NO MORE LEAKS , AND THEY ARE RE-USEABLE

My solution to the leak on the front left was to wipe a smear or 3 bond grey on the outside when the rocker cover was installed, using the same 3 bond to seal it. bit like a bandaid on the outside. In frustration, it was a last resort and has worked perfectly for about 150 hours now. Hard to spot as the colour matches the engine. I just remember not to clean too agressively around there with solvents.

I know this is an old thread but Taffys advice still hold true 8O (nearly)
My covers were both warped, a bit of wet-n-dry on a flat stone soon solved it though.
