:? my 02 501fe likes to leak oil from left front valve cover, the manual says to use silicone sealent on the valve cover , what type should I use? I have resealed this cover at least 2-4 times a season. I am using 1104 sealant, I think its by Locktite. Thanks.

I can't speak for the rest of the guys, but I like to use a Permatex brand called "gasket eliminator". It is an anaerobic sealer but stays flexible unlike thread locker. I have also had great results using it on the ignition cover. The gasket eliminator is red/clear in color and is very thick. It is not a silicone based sealer which I personally find those useless, what squeezes out can be wiped off easily and if any squeezes in the inside of the engine the oil will not loosen it. Comes back apart easily too.

Hope this helps!

I haven't tried it yet but Loctite 5810 Polyacrylate sealer
is listed as brand new and better than their silicone or
anaerobic sealers.

I have noticed that since the valve cover gaskets have changed from the old paper gray color to the semi-rubberized red color they work much better

your cure can be found in the 'owners doc' and involves a pane of glass (i said a pain of GLass!) some wet 'n dry and and some soap

It is critical to use a very thin film of sealer on the rocker cover (after verifing the cover is indeed flat as Taffy suggested).
I like to use the "gasket eliminator" on the inspection covers along with the gaskets.
Also check the breather hose is not split or pourous.

If it truly is the covers leaking and your looking for a quick fix, use the gasket eliminator. This will work just fine even if the covers are not flat. I have used this stuff thousands of times on many different applications (except fuel) have yet to have a leak!

Just to touch base. I recommend the gasket eliminator in conjunction with the gaskets on the inspection covers. I do not think I would recommend it on the actual rocker cover to head mating surface. I would stick with a very thin coat of 1104 for that.

Thanks Berger, I do use it myself with the gaskets when ever I can. I guess the name of the stuff could misslead people into discarding the gaskets. For reference though, (thread reading) if left with no choice, one could use this stuff in a pinch without a gasket if there is no chance of interference, as in the part being too close to something by not using a gasket. It can also be used to repair a torn gasket if one needs to ride before having the right parts.
