Oil Leak Waterpump hole

There is a small hole right behind the water pump of my FE550e '04. Since 3 rides ago, it started leaking oil out of it. At that time the berg only had 7hrs on. I took it to the dealer and said that he replaced the o-ring on the water pump shaft. I took it for the next ride and still there is the leak coming out of this small hole. Again I got it back to the dealer, this time he said that he replaced again the o-ring and the seal. Today, again there was oil coming out!!! FYI, the dealer here is new and I think does not now so much about the bergs. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Pete,

The bad news is that you will have to replace the bearing/seal (a Berg unique assembly that has a seal bonded to the face of the outer race of a bearing) in the cover. Tell him when he does it to degrease the bearing hole in the cover and the O.D. of the replacement bearing/seal assembly, and to wipe a thin coat (approximately 0.1mm thick of 'Three Bond 1211 Silicone Liquid Gasket' on the bore of the bearing hole in the cover and on the O.D. of the bearing and seal assembly prior to pressing it into the cover. This should cure at room temperature for 3 days before putting oil back in and starting the engine.

The good news is that you should have a warranty claim and it won't cost you anything.

What has probably happened is the seal has come loose from the bearing and is floating in the cover bore. The silicone liquid gasket will take care of that on the replacement assembly.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for your reply, I think I understand your explanation. I will take this to the mechanic and ask him to follow the procedure you say. It is good that it is still under warantee, the only problem for me is the trouble of taking the bike to them, and this is the third time, plus the emotional thing after you get a new bike and so soon there is a problem. Is this a common problem on the bergs?

Pete,

The problem is common to post 2000 Bergs, but can be solved using the process I recommended. The newer Bergs have an improved process for bonding the seal to the bearing (I have been told). The bearing/seal assembly in the gasket set I just got a couple of months ago seems to be O.K., but I will use the installation process I recommended to insure oil doesn't leak past the seal when I install it.

Here are 3 pictures of the bearing/seal assembly.

Hi Pete,
Are you sure, that you have oil leaking?
I have a 05 FSc and it had the same problem. We found out, that what we see is coolant. After its coming out from the hole, the water evaporates and the glikol stays. This looks similar like oil.
I discussed this with our importer here in Hungary, they said that they noticed this and gave me a new seal ring. They even change it on brand new bikes. The new sealring ( I think this is 03 mod tipe) is black and the outer surface is rubber. The original one is brown and the outer surface is metal. For whatever reason the brown can't stand the coolant and if it's not leaking immediately the rubber part geting hard and than wears out.

I changed this yesterday evening, just lay down the bike on it's right side and remove the waterpump cover. The coolant will not drain out. After removing the wheel, the old sealring can be taken out with a bent screwdriver or needle. This means no more dismounting needed.

What I learnt from the importer is , they never seen the bearing - sealing unit leaking. They sold a few to one of their dealers, who still have it as a non moving stock.

I hope this helps.

regards,

Imre

Pete, a small problem for a great bike. My 02fx470 had the small problem. A very small amount of oil was leaking out of the weep hole. I still flogged it for 50 miles checking the oil every 5 or so mile never lost enough to have to add oil. After the weekend my dealer did the above repair and I have not had an oil leak since. I did have to replace the outer seal once of a coolant leak. I did that my self and it was a very easy & cheap repair. Good luck with your new Berg ride on!

To Imre:
Hi Imre, Thanks for your help. For sure it is oil. I took some photos of the bike after the last enduro, but I do not know how to post them to this site. Thanks anyway, I will let the forum know the eventual solution.

To Marlin:
Hi Marlin, thanks as well for the imput. The leak is not so dramatic so as there is a need to add oil. Last weekend I put 2hrs of enduro riding, from the oil level viewer, I estimate it might have lost about 50-100cc of oil. It would be good if I could know the procedure and parts changed your dealer did to fix the problem.

Thanks,
Petros

I finally managed to take the 'berg out for an enduro, after I got it back from the dealer for the thrid time, who promised that he fixed the leak problem for good.
The conditions today were bad, too dry gravel, too dusty, and too bad rear tyre, no visibility when I had somebody infront and no grib, so I could not push hard the engine. After the first 10 minutes I stoped to check. There was just a teardrop-like oil coming out of the small hole. But that was it. For the rest of the ride there was no oil coming out. I hope it is fixed now.
By the way, the dealer told me that he changed both sealers/bearing and the o-ring, according to instructions he got from Austria.
On more info, is that the dealer, who is a friend, told me that he is faced with the same problem with the FX450 and FS650 he is using for racing.
Also today was my first ride with the new slip-on silencer "Yikashi". It has a nice deep sound and a nice increase of power at low rpm, nice....
