Oil Leak from Starter Motor O Ring

I have a constant leak from my Starter Motor O Ring - 99600FE.

I replaced the one that failed about 6 hours after I got the bike 2nd hand and I noticed it had extra sealant around it from previous owner. I put in one I could get from a auto shop in a o ring kit and thought problem was solved. After a few hours it happened. My official spare that I ordered came in from dealer so I treied to fit that tonight. Looked to be narrower than my temp one but same diameter. It started leaking straightaway. Any Ideas on how to fix this ???

Might be a remote chance it is leaking from somewhere else near the O Ring but I doubt it.

I have a 00 FE501E with the identical starter to engine interface as your 99.

IMHO, the leak is caused by fretting of the starter housing in the engine case, which coupled then the abrasive action of sand in the mix increases the gap between the starter and the engine case allowing oil to leak past the o-ring.

Shortly after I bought my 00 I noticed some sand accumulating in this area (I ride in the California desert).

I removed the starter, cleaned everything up with brake cleaner, and put a generous amount of ThreeBond 1211 around the starter housing and o-ring and installed the starter. I wiped the excess 1211 off, leaving enough in place to insure that sand would not get in between the starter housing and the engine case.

No leaks in the 10,650 miles I have ridden it to far.

Regards,

Joe

could be true Joe. I am not sure if I have had any foreign material get in to that area to cause abrasion as it has always looked clean but the first o-ring from previous owner did have extra gasket seal over it. Also the starter seems to go back in place very easily so the O Ring may not be sealing tight. I am going to have to try that as it seems to be the only way to possibly get a seal.

Thanks for the info.
