Oil in crankcase

I just bought an old(1992) 501 and it smokes quite badly. Found this excellent forum. Read about the smoking habit these bikes seems to have. Oil in the airbox aso. So I started to look over my bike:

Oil in the airbox -> yep.

Checked oil level -> not overfilled.

Took off the clutch side to check the reed valve -> it looks ok. But there were a oil coming out of the hole when I removed it. So it seems to be faulty, and needs replacing, anyway. Or....

...is there any other way to get oil in the crankcase?

Any help is appreciated by a newbie 4-stroke owner.

Welcome Dan,

In regards to your reed valve. It's not a positive seal so there will always be some oil under the crank after it's been sitting for a bit. That's why when you change the oil, after the majority of the oil has drained out, you have to be sure and kick it through several times while leaning the bike a little to the left, then when you lean it back over to the right, you will surprised how much more oil comes out. In fact, on one of my rebuilds on my 94 501, I had the shop weld in a bung for a drain plug right under the crank so I would be sure and get all the oil out.

The old style breather system also did not have a drip tube so to speak like the newer bikes so oil in the air box is quite normal. Also, the older bikes like yours do use oil I think because of this, so if riding for a long time, be sure and keep an eye on the oil level.

And speaking of oil level, you say you checked it and it is not overfilled. Very respectfully sir, how did you check it?

When you say the bike smokes a lot, could you give us a little more specifics? Have you ridden the bike very much, or have you seen that just from starting it up at home?

Be sure and visit the "Owners Doc!" for a good overview of these bikes.

Thanks for a quick reply :)

Oil level check:
Like the onwers manual says: Up to the bottom edge of the filler tube.

Smoking:
Smokes pretty much all the time. Both cold and after an hours driving.
Last time I was out riding I came out on a road after some trail riding and when I opened up the throttle it looked like a cold 2-stroke with 15% oil in the fuel had passed by. Big blue cloud.

welcome dan!

i think you should treat that engine to a rebuild don't you?

i would think the linar is worn and scored. mechanically you can still get most things.
