oil filter on 2000 FC501

Again, another post for a friend. He said he found that the bike has a stainless steel oil filter but was wondering if there is a more effective\recommended oil filter he should be using on this bike?

Any links or posts or opinions on this would be great so I can pass it along to him,

I didn't find much when I did oil filter 501...search...

most people think that the ss filter is the step up from the paper filter.

So, should I tell him to leave it alone? He wants to make sure he has maximum retention of particles... and if that means using paper more often, he's ok, but if the SS is the way to go, I'll tell him this too....

you'll find differing opinions on this, but i prefer the ss. theres no variability between oil changes and i'd bet the micron rating is as good if not better than most paper filters. the biggest reason i hear why people don't use them is the initial cost. he doesn't have that issue.

Good question, and one that would keep me from buying the reusable filters personally. I can't see how a regular rinsing of solvent could possibly clean the filter properly. How would you know if it was clean. Many of the particles trapped are too small to see.

If you have access to an ultrasonic parts washer, then I'd say go for the reusable ones. But, with paper filters widely available for 6 bucks now, I sure can't see where the advantage is. Add in the fact that you really only need to change the filter out every two or three oil changes, I'll stick with the paper.

when i clean my ss filter, i usually just rinse with clean solvent and blow dry. i also have a small u/s cleaner that i occasionally use. just for fun, i put it in the u/s after cleaning with solvent and blowing dry, and saw no residue left in the u/s pan. works 4 me.
