Oil filter cover bolt is going nowhere. Nowhere.

Hi there guys,

I have a friend. Let's call him Justin. Justin has an '01 470 FXe. Recently, Justin stripped the head of the allen bolt (lower) on the oil filter cap.

Justin purchased new bolts.

After running it around a bit and allowing it to warm up, he took his brand new allen T-wrench(one size up) with some valve grinding compound and went to work. He sank the allen, and it is a great fit. No slippage at all.

The problem is that the bolt is not moving. With the assistance of a pair of vice grips on the wrench, he can't get it to budge. The engine is warm.

He is putting enough torque on it that he's now worried that he's going to break the bolt, ending his riding season before it's begun.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and he swears that he has a tube of anti-seaze waiting by the bike if he ever gets the bolt out.

thanks,

If Justin can get a good fit with a straight allen t-wrench and give it a good hard tap on the end of it while applying turning pressure it may very well come out.

If you have proper access, an old-fashioned impact driver (the kind you hit with a hammer) works really well in this situation. You would have to run and get the proper-sized hex bit--the kind you would snap on to the end of a rachet.

This is low-tech, but an impact driver is one tool I always have around.

i've seen "justin" at work with mechanical things.. he's in deep doodoo.
i agree with the above suggestions, but would add to try alternately tightening then loosening said bolt til it breaks loose.
good luck (for what its worth, i can see from here that the filter is clean :thumb:

This is your best bet... and you get to hit your bike too!

Hey there guys.

Please take a look at the attached pic. You see the lower bolt that I'm having a problem with right? What? You don't see the lower bolt? Why not? Ooooh, I know! somebody put the decomp cable right in front of it.

Ok, can I remove this decomp fixture without having to calibrate, reassemble or otherwise commit to more work outside of my bolt dilemna? I've got the necessary tools, but I can't get them to the bolt.

As an aside, I'm looking forward to the chance to strip 5 more allen bolts.

thanks,

Our illustrious leader... sheeesh!

That's your clutch slave cylinder. Leave the hose attached, but unbolt it from the engine. No "calibration" required...

Thank you sir. Nobody ever accused me of being a genius.

I'll let you know if it works out. If it doesn't, you'll hear me.

thanks,

BTW - don't squeeze the clutch lever while the slave is off the engine. It would blow the slave piston out of it's housing.

Hey there guys,

Success! The offending bolt was removed, filter was changed, fluids replaced and clutch bled.

My handy-dandy impact driver is now my best friend in the whole world.

Actual cost of bolt removal: $157.87
Actual value of bolt removal: priceless

Justin told me I should ban you.

Hey schwim
Hope you're not using that little lever on the left for gear changes..
Ever had to bleed the decomp????
sorry .. couldn't resist.

No, but in fairness, I've never had to bleed the clutch either.

Oh, and you're banned.

Sorry, I too, am unable to resist the easy ones :D

thanks,

You look way to much at home with that hammer you must have worked on a few Harleys before you owned the Berg.
