The thread on my oil drain plug has been stripped and needs to be repaired ( Helicoil) :( . Has anyone repaired one on a post 09 FE berg and can you advise if you need to take the motor out to helcoil ?? Looks as if it can be dropped a little to get straight access to the oil drain plug hole ....

thanks
Marc

I am having the same issues on my 2009, to one or two threads are stripped. Did you ever get a solution?

Make sure you use a large drain plug washer after you do the repair. This will help from further damages and also make a better seal as the Helicoil will now be double threads and oil can seem to find its way past anything. I have used it on allot of Jap bikes with good success.

I've used a product made loc-tite I think. It a kind of epoxy makes threads. I used it on my cars water pump bolt worked good. It's rated to grade 5 SAE

In my case I think only the first couple threads are stripped due to cross threading when I tried to start it with a ratchet (lesson learned). Has anyone ever tried self tapping drain plugs? I am considering these because it will hopefully save me from having to drop the engine in order to get straight access for a Helicoil/retapping, and I am also worried that if I have to move up a size in bolts that it will not fit as there is not much room for that bolt.

It has been a frustrating couple months with this bike so any thoughts or possible solutions would be greatly appreciated.

I guess you could fill the bike will some cheap oil and tap it whilst the oil is draining out, it will lubricate the tapping process but more importantly force the shavings out side of the engine case.

Tapping is way to go be sure your going in at the right angle. If still leaks try The loc-tite fix it be would perfect for this not cutting new/bigger threads it adds to messed up threads making them Good.

a thought - if a bigger thread is required, maybe you can keep the bolt head size and/or get an inside-hex cut head? ( i.e. "allen" head? it's called?) surely alternate head configs can be found .?.

I'm sure that I bought a kit off KTM, time-sert and drill bit, just tapped a new thread to suit the insert that was then Loctite-ed in. Fit and forget, original drain plug. I used cotton buds with a dab of thick grease to pick up any shavings from the tapping. Worked ok on my 650 anyway!;)

The product is Loctite stripped thread repair kit #28654 it fixes the threads there is no drilling. It's rated at grade 5. price about $20 to $35 USD. Used it on my cars water pump still holding 10 years later fixes. I wouldn't use it on anything super important but for a drain plug it would be great.
