Typical magnetic pickup on the oil drain plug.

Hi Dale,

Man that looks kind of gnarly! Was this out of an engine that has few hours on it??

Mine typically just has a little fuzz on it when changing after 3 hours.

Of course, I haven't dropped the oil out of my brand new bike that has three hours on it yet, so it might look worse than this one!

2004 550 with roughly 700 Pre Baja test miles.
Engine compliments of Bergdaddy, Desert Raceworks, Las Cruces NM.

Thanks Dale,

So, did they finish Baja?? I saw their posts leading up to that race but nothing else. :!:

Bergdaddy and company are going about this the right way.
A new 550 was purchased, run in and then flogged for 700 miles.
The engine has since been removed and completely disassembled for inspection / upgrades. Said engine shall be returned, run in, tested, tuned and forwarded to Baja for the 2005 November event.

Lets really get behind this project and let them know we care.

Sounds like the professional way to do it indeed!!

I have been checking out their products. I like those racks they have for the rear fender. I'm just not sure about those rad guards though, looks like the rads would still be vulnerable to sticks poking a hole in said rads. I'll give them a shout and see what they think.

I'll find some excuse to buy something from them to help them along in their project. Man, it sure would be great to see a Berg in the results from Baja. Maybe even knock Honda off their throne!!!!

By the way, that seems like very little debris for 700 miles of riding!! :)

Bergdaddy Rad Guards

Hi, DaleEO....
I run a set of bergdaddys' rad. guards on my '98 fc, riding almost exclusively woods trails (aka brushbusting) here in Maine. These trails are really tight knarly, snotty, rooty, rocky and muddy, with a whole bunch of trees, brush, wait-a-minute bushes and the occasional near-head-on with uneducated atv-ers, usually resulting in a real off-trail zig to prevent bodily, and machine, damage. Other than the normal bugs and chafe from roost off of the other bikes, no damage to the rad or rad guards, although the pilot has taken an occasional gouge!! #-o

Hey Dale,

Well, my run in oil change prduced quite a gobb of stuff on the magnetic drain plug. Makes your posted pic look pretty clean!!

I'll let you know how the second change looks after a few more hours.

Hey FC501east,

Thanks for your input on the rad guards. I have a set on my 01 501 that are more like a punched sheet of aluminum. I have found on many occasion that I had the what was left of sticks broken off in the holes from my of course excursions to pass people during desert races.

Do you have one of bergdaddy's skid plates too? I'm thinking of buying one of those as well. As they look like they give much more protection for the side cases.

Thanks again,

Skid plate

Hi, DaleEo.....
Skid plate on my '98 was on the bike when I got it; no identifying marks or logos. It is very sturdy, has taken many shots during rock-overs and miscellaneous failures-to-communicate between rider and bike!! I suspect bergdaddys' is a great choice!!
