Has anyone fit a oil cooler to a 01-08 motor? I dont really care about the oil temp but want to increase the ammount of oil. I am rebuilding my 550 and use the bike for 500-1000 mile trips and hate to change the oil every day. NEED MORE VOLUME
issues i wonder about : i dont want the sump to overfil. placement of tank could go where the underseat tank would go .i would really like to add a full quart of oil making it a 2 quart system
advise please
thanks

some pics in weeds gallery, if you want all the normal engine oil flow to got through it you can tap into the flow through the oil filter cap or run it as a bypass with a small amount of flow. i think there are some pics on the JBS site as well.

I asked this same question the other week. I have a Joe rocket kit but the tank is small and I was considering building larger tank, Or even wondering if the underseat tank was hot oil proof. For the same reason of doing longer hauls. My only concern was if the oil pressure would be affected.

my concern is the level of oil. i am afraid if the remote oil is at too high a level the oil will overfill the crankcase causing many porblems.
i understand how to get the oil in and out of the engine and filter by adapting the oil filter cover but dont know how to keep the oil in the resivior, not starving the motor for oil and not having the oil all drain back into the motor. cooling the oil is just an adde benifit for my needs.

i know the motors are relaible ... i have 250 hours on mine and cheeseburger has twice that. just dont want o change the ol everyday.

I'm not a tech head so I don't know if having an oil tank higher would cause a problem. I'd assume that if the tank volume was the same or greater than the cranckase volume then that might become an issue. If your just running a cooler I don't think there would be enough volume in it to worry about. If you want to double the volume you might have to consider some sort of tank as a cooler doesn't add much. This is what I'm trying to nut out.
What if you ran the oil tank lower. For example one of those Dakar style bash/skid plates that have a water tank built into them, but plumb it for oil instead. keeps the weight low as well. But then there's no gravity feed and you would be relying on the oil pump to do all the work. All this is getting beyond the small capacity of my brain.

hoosaberg beat me to it....

never done it but FWIW id make a 6mm thick alloy plate box section in front of the engine so the level is about the same as in the engine cases and below the oil filter cap. check the GHR honda aust safari bikes

divert all the oil flow out of the oil filter cap into the extra tank then pick it back up near the bottom then into the engine that way if its full the oil pressure will be about the same and it will prime quickly.

my concerns with doing this lie in the external oil lines being ripped off by sticks if not carefully made and routed

Thanks Bushie, with that information you can turn every enduro bike with 1 litre of engine oil into a long distance adventure hauler. I have a plan now.
