just purchased an 04 550 fe, on my first ride l noticed some oil running down the crank case just in front of the water pump housing. there is a small hole in the housing which l presume is for this, but being my first berg i just want to be sure. any help would be appreciated.

Depends how much "some oil" is.
1st make sure your oil level isn't too high.
If that's OK then it's either leaking thru a seal that's on the oil side of the water pump shaft bearing or an O ring that lives under that bearing.
You need to remove the side cover to fix and if this is what you need to do then replace the seal on the water side of the bearing while your at it.

And OrangeBerg sells a kit to fix it more permanantly. PM him for details, he will send them anywhere.

If you can visulaise a sealed bearing, with one seal removed, then this is what keeps the oil in the engine on the wp shaft. Its not what bearing seals are designed for, the priessure fluctations of a big single. OrangeBerg's kit sorts this with a proper oil seal.
