oil circuit - left cover

now here is a topic oft covered when i first joined a few years back and haven't seen it since!

the oil leaking through the w/p bearing cannot escape out through the leak hole so easily so i want to know what you did about it?

same for the oil seal down on the crank, the hole behind that can get blocked as well.

rotary file time methinks!

even the oil behind the right main struggles!

what's curious to me is that the early models (01-03) don't seem to have a weeping problem. it didn't seem to show up til the 04 models. the wp seal on my 02 650 has been abused several times but still doesn't leak. is the seal covering the weep hole?
never had any trouble with the oil hole in the left cover.

well yes it does actually!

the hole comes into the side of the bearing housing and of course when you press the bearing in it goes straight past or 'over' the weep hole! to be truly effective, a ditch should be cut or i suppose you'd call it a 'groove' across the bottom face of the housing linking the shaft to the weep hole.

i do recall this topic being of "big" concern when i started here but i'd not even had the cover off at the time!

thing is, if for any reason you struggle to get the cover on (and why not - we all day at sometime!) you can catch the lower oil seal with the edge of the crank and shove it deeper where it stops flow coming down to the crank.

not very important but i thought i'd mention it!

the R/H crank bearing feed is better but i would like to see all the bearings fitted. essentially there is a drill hole down behind the bearing housing that turns into a groove and stops say 7mm down which is just enough to be passed the outter race of MOST bearings - maybe all? a good thing to do here is to take a 12mm drill and drill the top hole thus creating a perfect 'funnel' effect. the later engines have an oil FEED here i think.

bloody hell you lot are REALLY hard work sometimes!!!!

do we have any record of these failures?

now you know why everything has gone to these steel-backed oil seals - when they're just in they don't move! there must be a reason for this? why would the factory do this?

only one reason....
