Oil Change Trouble

Hi All ,

This is my first post so hopefully I'll get it right . :)

I have changed my oil on my 2009 FE450 tonight and after changing and measuring the oil when I started it up it ran for a while in netural then died :( I clicked it into first and with the cluch in I am getting no movement from the back wheel and the bugger won't start . The oil level is with in the lines and I have cleaned all the filters and screens .............................a little help or some suggestions would be appreciated

Not sure I follow exactly what you tried after it stopped. Do you mean you tried to restart it in first with the clutch engaged? Presumably you had it on a stand with the back wheel off the floor at the time but I don't understand why you would try that? Or did you mean the wheel won't turn if you try turning it when the bike's in gear, i.e. the engine won't turn over?

When you try to start it what exactly happens - e.g. does the fuel pump run, does the starter motor turn the engine over, does the FI light come on?

I'd have thought it's unlikely to be anything to do with the oil change unless you'd managed to run it without oil circulating for long enough to make it seize, but that seems very unlikely if you have a good oil level unless the oil's not circulating for some reason (e.g. a blockage somewhere). I've never seized one of these (yet) but I'd guess it would be pretty obvious if it had happened, and if it will turn over on the starter it's obviously not seized.

Post as much info as you can about the exact symptoms, what you've tried and what the results were, as that will help people to make good suggestions. Also useful to know things like whether the bike's new to you, how many hours it's done and what servicing it's had, and whether this is the first oil change you've done or you're an expert at them.

Thanks Petem ,

I am an average knowledge mechanic and do my own oil changes regurally and this is the first time I've had any drama . It have 2,000 km on the clack I'm the 2nd owner for the past 12mths ( it had a freash piston and rings installed just be for I got it) , I keep the air filter clean (every 2nd ride or so ) and change the oil every 15hrs or so

I have got it started and it runs for a lttle while then when it gets up to temp it cuts out completely and will not start again until it cools down . When it is hot it is very stiff when in gear and will only bump start in 3rd or 4th .

I thought it may be the oil so I have dumped that and flushed the engine through with fresh oil and then topped it up to the specified volume ( new filter in too ) .

I then thought it may have been electrical so I have taken apart the starter button and removed the headlight and given it a good going over with WD40 and checking any points which may be corroded or not properly connected .

I have installed a Factory Husaberg Turbo fan and it is not kicking in when it comes up to heat (I'm in Sydney Aust and it can get pretty warm here ) . So I have checked the sensor and all the connections and they seem to be fine . I am going to disconnect it for the next test to see it that makes a difference . ( At the moment waiting for the battery to recharge )

Just when it starts to cut out and splutter usually 4 to 5 min of running the FI light comes on and it won't start till it cools down a little .

The fuel pump sounds like it's working and it was running tickety boo before the oil change . I did give it a good wash prior to running it and changing the oil but it was dry before I opend and drained any thing .

Hopefully with this info somebody may be able to help me solve this disturbing quandry which I now find myself in .

I would like to get it done myself but if I have to it's off to the great Wealth Hazard that is my Husaberg Dealer to get it fixed

Cheers to you all

Bill

Nup not the Turbo Fan Sensor .......the hunt contionues ..........next the fuel tank is coming off !!!!

Valve clearances can close up enough when hot to cause a similar problem. When it does die, does the fuel pump run if you just flick the starter enough to get the FI light to come on ?

Is your spark plug in new/good condition ?

I take it your coolant level is ok? Most likely the problem with the fan not running is going to be down to the fan itself, the temp sensor or the wiring, but I just wondered if the sensor isn't getting hot because you don't have any coolant circulating, either from lack of coolant, or something like a blockage or a failed water pump. That would also make the engine overheat which might explain some of the other symptoms. Having a feel at various points around the hoses and radiators you should be able to tell if you have hot coolant going into the radiators and cooler (but not cold) stuff coming out the other end.

Another possibility might be a problem with the temperature sensor that the EFI uses. If that's not working properly the EFI may think the engine's not getting warm even when it does, so when it really is cool everything's ok but when it gets warm the fuelling would be wrong. I had that a few times on my Husky and it either was a pig to start if the sensor was stuck on a high temperature, or would start but then run badly when it was warm if the sensor was stuck on a low temperature. Not sure how to test that unless you can find out what the reading should be and try it with a meter (or stick the bike on your dealer's diagnostic system).

Just realised there is one thing I've assumed that I don't think you actually said: when it's warm and has cut out and won't start, does it turn over on the starter but just not fire up, or does nothing happen when you press the starter button, i.e. like the engine's seized or the starter's not working?

You say the FI light comes on. Does it blink or stay on solid?

The ECU has a built in diagnostic system and the FI light will flash a code and tell you whats wrong. So if it's flashing a code, then let us know and we can help you out. At the very least, if there is a code then it is in the memory of the ECU and the dealer will be able to read it.

Eureka !!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Berg is back baby !!!!! Bob at Highway KTM at Rockdale sold me a kit for the Fuel Filter and I gave the Electrics a bloody good going over with a parts cleaner spray and some WD40 and she is running like a TOP !!!!!! found out a pitfall of going into a well stocked Bike Shop though .....ya end up buying half the bloody shop !!!!

Bought a set of MotoComposites carbon fibre Cluch and side guards a new helmet and a new set of boots .....and a chest brace for my gopro !!!!!

Better keep those on the down low from the Minister of War & Finance !!!

Taking her for a proper test ride tomorrow ...............Fingers crossed it will be all fine cause it's a mongeral to push out from where I go riding !!!
