Oh my.....have you seen this Aprilia v-twin dirt bike? 72 hp, 13,000 rpm redline (sm version), in 450 and 550, sizes, enduro and SM versions? Oh my heart be still!!! That beautiful temptress of aluminum, plastic and steel...but then I think to myself, "you know, self, if you think your 99 fe400 had "teething" problems".....not to mention there are 8 valves to adjust, two pistons to replace, so on and so forth...That 650 berg just looks better and better all the time.

If I did it again it would be another 550......the Prilly is heavy, feels heavy....dunno where the 72 hp came from ??.... those are numbers on the bigbore race bike.....when that comes over here it will rival the Husaberg in power but will always take the back seat when it comes to weight .....not sure about handling ?? If I were to guess the Berg has that hands down as well ... the first 450's will be 450 sm's and MX bikes.....no lights, the second round will be 550's and bikes with lights.........very nice Italian machinery....I'll keep my Berg !!! or buy another SM race bike when they are FI'd.......yea I got the hat too !!!! :p

what record in dirt bikes do aprilia have to KNOW that a twin is actually going to win races?

the world is littered with the carcases of dead project bikes. when a 125 is the fastest thing you can race you have got to question this as a gimmick and nothing more-well at least till one comes past me!

Yeah, looks neat. But with the engine exposed like that I would be very sad very soon. Granite wins over alloy every time. Just think how we consider our water pump to be exposed.... Remember all those flattened 2-stroke exhausts? Well..???
IMHO a poor design for enduro at least. More suited for desert riding and SM.
But pretty to look at.

Depending on the maintenance schedule, that 550 enduro model may well become my next Dual Sport bike. I don't think they're coming over in street legal form, but our Texas politicians are still reasonable on such things. 8)

Have you taken a good look at the custom shaped exhaust and muffler?

Purty for sure but just imagine the cost of an upgraded titanium system.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the Aprilia's start running in competition against the other big bore SM bikes. Fast for sure but they do have more weight to pull around the track.

From what I gather, the whole idea of a twin cylinder off road bike, has to do with noise. Or less of it, that is. Supposedly, a twin is easier to make quiet than a single. I hope this is not the direction new quiet technology takes us. I am ALL for new technology. I am all for new and promising break throughs. But IMHO, stepping forward would bring us to innovative solutions that make things SIMPLER, not more complex. Complexity is its own worst enemy. Just look at how Honda, who just three short years ago had the worlds BEST reputation for reliability and longevity, now has the exact opposite rep with the advent of the new CRF's. And to think they used those to replace the XR line, the machines that gave them the good rep. As technology advances, I think we will see less complex, easier to maintain designs. This new aprilia, as cool as it looks, is really a step backwards. Now, perhaps if it were a two-stroke twin with a pressurised oiling system that didn't require the oil to be mixed with the fuel, and each cylinder was designed to produce peak torque at different rpm's to smooth-out and spread-out the power delivery...

To date, no 550's are slated to come to the USA, or so I read in one of the cycle rags last month. My local aprilia dealer claims to have two 450 svx's, and two 450 rvx's coming this summer. The only word he has about the 550 versions is "unavailable".

well well, I just read in the april 06 issue of dirt rider magazine "Aprilia claims the valve life of the new twin to be eight times that of the crf-x". Is this great news, or is it really not saying much?
