oem fan

do many people use the fan. Does it work all the time, or kick in at a certain temperature. Have not seen it of the wec bikes. What is meant to be the main benefit?

The OEM fan works off a thermostatic switch in the bottom of the radiator. On pre 09 bikes the fan runs when ever the motor is over temperature, running or not. On the 09 bikes the fan will shut off when the motor is off reguardless of the temperature.
I know some of the WEC bikes were running the OEM in 06. Perhaps they only install them for specific events.

On '09 bike the fan works great. It starts on 100 degrees and stops on 95. When the engine is stopped the fan stops, which is good for preserving the battery. You need a fan if you are riding slowly on first or second gear for 5 min or more in warm weather.

Did you get the fan with the new bike or you bought it separately?
280$ it's a lot of $ for a fan...my 250F came with one, and anyway the KTM one cost around 100$...

I bought the earlier model fan kit, pre 09 and installed it on my 09. It is about 1/2 the price of the 09 model. The only difference is the way the fan mounts. It looks like you are paying alot more for a silly little bracket.

Does it switch off when the motor is off like the 2009 one?

The power relay controls the fan off with the engine off on the 09.
On my 06 it will run for alittle while after the motor is off when it's hot. It has never been an issue. I do keep my battery fully charged when not in use though.
I suppose you could wire in an additional switch if you thought it would be a problem. so far for me, no problem.

I got is for 120 Euro after I got the bike.

That is a lot of money for such a simple device (and bracket). Are computer cooling fans suitable for this application?

No. The power of a standard computer fan is about 10-30% of original fan. Computer fans are not water and mud resistant and normally works only a couple of rides. The only computer fan I have had good experience with was one Intel fan from server machine, which worked for 2 years! However this was very expensive fan $50+ USD. And still the power was about 1/2 of the Husaberg/KTM fan. The good was that it was 10 times less weight.

The KTM fan is about 80Euro over here compared to the 120Euro I payed for the OEM. The fan is the same. The bracket and the temperature sensor are different. The KTM sensor was about 80/85 and Husaberg is 95/100.

Thanks for the info re. computer fans. Yes you are right, that type of fan would be destroyed very quickly and not be effective anyway. I live in the desert (Middle East), and as summer approaches I must get hold of a fan from the shop.

This is good to know, as the stock KTM sensor turns the fan on way too early. I routinely replace the KTM sensors with 91 C units (for an '84 BMW 318i) which turn on at about 94 C and off at 88 C.
