OEM fan checking that it works

I have installed the radiator fan, but how do I know it works. I was thinking of letting the bike idle for a while and seeing if it came on, but chickened out after a while. If it does not work the bike may just get too hot and blow the radiator cap. Has any one put one on and noticed when it starts up.

I think the easiest way is to connect the 2 wires from the temp.-switch.

and then you know if the electric circuit works, After that you "cook" the tempswitch while measuring the temperature and with a multimeter measuring if it switches at your desired temp.

If the fan doesn't come on after loooong idle, it surely is good to do the suggested tests, as it then sounds like something is not set up correctly.

Also the sensor must be in right place ie after/before cooler, but that I dont know anything about.

If short circuiting the temp switch proves the fan and wiring are OK then you can remove the switch and put it in some boiling/hot water, say in a pot on the stove, and monitor the temp with a thermometer and the switch with a multimeter to find out exactly when it switches.

does the fan need a relay? or is the temp switch beefy enough?

thanks, shorting the switch showed the fan works. I was surprised how. much air it moved and appears to suck further than just the fan size. Will not test the switch yet until given it an idle test. No reason why it should not work correctly, but will advise how long and in what conditions it comes on.
