Number Plate location.

Hi All.

Not sure if this is the same throughout the world but in the UK a number plate must be displayed on the back of a bike like this.

I think the size really spoils the aesthetics and look of the bike. A number of people I have seen have smaller and smaller plates which are likely Illegal.

What are your thoughts on it? What do you do? Does anyone have any novel ideas for location or look.

Ive also seen someone mount a plate on the frame between the engine and the rear wheel.

I've seen it argued that the jutting poates are actually DANGEROUS, and it's not unconvincing to me ... high-speed getoff and that plate could cut a finger pretty bad!

Looking at it from the point of view of the police, maybe if we get stickers wth the license plate number front and rear we can scratch their back a little - make their job easier - we can kind of bargain to have the plate itself out of the way?

i know a guy that had a little replica sticker of his license plate on the front fender -
the police loved his upstanding citizenship! So much that they didn't notice that the bike wasn't properly registered at the time

Also, passing inspection is one thing and appeasing or going under the radar of police on the road is another thing. Full legal setup for the first and a convincing solution for the second.

Agreed. I tend to jump over my bike from one peg because swinging my leg over catches the door sized plate on my pants which either hurts or pulls the plate off its plastic mounts (i keep a spare set of nylon bolts)

Most people in the UK get away with 7x5" plates but the law is a barn door size 9x7" which is what you can see on mine in the pic. I think my mates bike has a smaller but illegal one on.

Mine originally had a bigger plate as well. Though from the pictures it doesn't seem as big as yours. But the thing is it was getting burned by the exhaust gases.

So I just got a smaller (illegal) one:

I've been pulled over and they don't really care about that, at least where I live. As long as you have insurance and a plate that is visible is all fine. That Aprilia would not pass the test!

Thats one sweet ride! your plate is tiny. I wouldn't mind that at all

I have my plate just like that last one and was warned by the local police that it was illegal because they could not read it from behind in their car due to the angle of it. Here in Australia they want us to have them hanging down on the standard mount which we all know lasts all of about a few seconds when you hit a decent track!

I suspect they just don't want " dirt bikes" on our roads and hope to put us off by making it almost impossible to have a legal set up that works well off road. Or maybe it's really because a speed camera may not be able to read it? Nah, I'm sure it's some sort of " safety" reason I'm too silly to think about, ha ha!

I think its probably camera related rather than any safety! I can't imagine a licence plate promotes safety in any way. Though the feds will say the speed cameras deter speed thus promote safety.

Thinking about it. In the UK we have them Truvelo forward facing speed cameras so you could go through at 100mph on a bike and not be sent a ticket since there is no requirement for a plate on the front.

Apparently if you do it too many times or on specific days a police car will pull up near by and wait for you. Might be a myth though.

Also in the UK they have just dropper the requirement to display a road tax disk, presumably to save money, as such its all computerised. So that has nothing to do with being visibly displayed either, which it used to be.

Another sideways answer - maybe we can use a quick-release system to clip the plate in/out of the way when we are riding trails? Dzus maybe? Or have it swivel between horiz/vert?

Bit wild ideas I know

I use a 6x4 flexi plate on my bikes, just put the massive one on for the MOT.

Not had any issues so far but try and ride under the radar in the built up areas where the police are likely to be.

This is similar to mine, but mine are 6x4 rather than 4x6.
