Number of teeth on sprocket and links on chain

Hi, I just brought home my first 'Berg and I'm looking so much forward to start riding it :)

I need a new set of sprockets and a new chain.
The old sprocket in the front has 14 teeth and the old rear sprocket has 42 teeth.
I see there are much more rear sprockets with 47-52 teeth than 42 teeth, so I'm just wondering how big of a difference it will be for the acceleration if I buy a rear sprocket with for example 48 teeth?
And if I have 6 more teeth on my new sprocket, do I need to have 6 more links on my new chain?

Here is a picture of the bike. It's a 2003 Husaberg FE 501

15/44 and 16/44 would be my choice. That's what I have right now. Kart Track and Dirt 15t and street or bigger track 16t. Should be 112 or 114 links. Not sure.

This will help you find what speed increase or decrease as a percentage you will have.

It's not nearly as big of a difference in chain length as you would think. The chain only goes around half the sprocket. If you have say 112 links and go 6 teeth more on the rear it's only like 2 more links for the chain and the axle may end up in the same place. Teeth and links are not the issue. It's the circumference of the part of the sprocket the chain is wrapped around.

I just buy a 120 link and use a chain breaker to cut it. I'd definitely go up in the front to a 15 at least (less chain wear).

You'd need 3 more links - but as you can only have even numbers, you need to check if the rear wheel has more adjustment forwards or rearwards. Add 2 or 4 more links accordingly. Start with 4 links longer - you can always shorten a chain!

PS - get some paint on that trailer wheel!

I recently regeared my 570. It came with 14/42. I stayed with the 14 front because I read that a 13 would accelerate chain wear. After much deliberation I went wih a 48 tooth rear sprocket, and I'm very happy with the results. That required a new chain, though - one more link required.
