Nothing in my exhaust silencer

There should definitely be something in there, yes. If you are not the first owner, obviously the packing material and the tube inside were removed for performance. I don't know about British laws but I would be surprised if this bike passed inspection for street.

Check the parts manual in the download section (here or at www.Husaberg.se) and check the fiche for the exhaust pipe.

In 02 the exhaust was redesigned and indeed the tip looked different. I know because I installed a 2002 end tip on my 2001 exhaust and it is less corked (Sandskipper parted this one out).

So I was wrong about that but there should be some stuffing material against the walls of the silencer, behind some mesh, as well as a piece of stuffing around the tube inside the end tip.

Check the parts manual 2001-2002, page 25.

When I repacked mine, I had to drill out the rivets at the back end of the pipe.
That is where the packing went for mine. There was nothing in the end cap section.

My FE 550 '05 model was set up from the shop with the tea strainer (spark arresor mesh) removed, this normally sits right in the end of the eahauste end cap, and is removed by grinding away a few welds, also my bike came with the 'S' bend pipe removed, the s bend pipe is a short curved tube from the end cap end, that does not sleeve into the perforated exhaust core, it sits within the chamber that you mention, usually its bolted, but may be riveted a little over half way to the end of the silencer.

The s bend tube within that end chamber forms an area that the exhaust must bounce from the end of the can back to the middle to then funnel out the end cap, in Australia, it seems that many of the dealers will remove them ror predominantly off road use, I'd suggest litle change it noise level, but must breathe easier.

I have ( I think ) attached the schematil from the current design silencer, you can see the bent section of pipe attached to the end cap, this is what I suspect has been removed.

Hope it helps, there are some pics of an aftermarket exhaust cap in my gallery awilksch you may be able to draw some conclusions from that as well.

the idea is partly to reduce noise by having the staggered exit to the pipe the sound waves aren't exiting straight out.
seen this on several bikes i've had, 2 & 4 st.

unless your bikes highly tuned i doubt it would make much difference. it's worked fine the way it is for the last 6 years so the exhaust pressure probably isn't doing anthing adverse to the exhaust.

repacking mine soon. only thing i might do is look at getting some nuts brazed nto the inside of the exhaust so i can replace the rivets with bolts.

something i used to do on 2st's that made repacking much easier.

I suppose a previous owner has removed the other pipe which connects to this one.

that's normal. thats the way they come stock. the tailpiece doesn't connect to the baffle.

My rivets were elongating. I have used a form of metal weld {squeezes out of a tube like silicon} to "weld"/stick the nuts on the inside. I found some smooth headed bolts to bolt into the nuts. I wanted smooth heads for the cosmetic value and normal heads would catch my MX jeans if?when I fall off. I wanted to braize the nuts but could n't get acces to any gas etc.
