Noisy gears, crunch and a few 8mm by 1mm rollers in Oil?

Ok, I was out on my 07 FE550 today and the above happened. I rode home drained oil and found a few bits of metal in the screen and a one intact roller bearing and a few bits mashed up stuck to the drain bolt. I don't have workshop manual to check which bearing has failed. Is this going to cost big money to sort out? Thanks in advance :(

there are small bearings like that on the 2 shafts for the electric start internals

you should be able to find out by taking the clutch cover off.

Thanks. I'll try that. Now that you've mentioned that, I do recall a few times when it has kicked back while trying to start when hot. I downloaded a Manual for her and see that the Idler and freewheel are the most likely culprits. Fingers crossed.

Are sure it was gear noise?
I'd put my money on a collapsed rocker bearing.

me too I forgetted about those

the ones on the starter shaft and the one with the plastic cage inside the one way clutch can't really come out as easily as the cam followers.

your gearbox has three really small needle roller bearings. from memory 10-12mm long and 1-1.5mm diameter. you have needle roller bearings supporting your clutch drum, kickstart gear and the idler gear from kickstart to back of clutch.

i agree, it doesn't sound like CFBs on this occasion, that's the week after next ok?

No probs. Thanks everyone. She's going into workshop tomorrow night hopefully. So should have a result by the end of the week. I'll keep you posted.
