No timing marks?

I opened up the side of my 01 fe650 to try to fix the starter sprague. Pulled off the clutch and lost my timing. The crank gear and counterbalance gear do not have the dots punched on the gears. How do I figure out things to get this set up properly. Once I find it, I'll mark the gears somehow. Thanks in advance

the clutch basket gear teeth should be level with the primary gear teeth whilst the intermediate gear teeth will be down about 2-3mm. If you don't have this then the gears are on the wrong way around.

that said, get the flywheel marks around so that the line on the right aligns with the top screw hole. then you'll need the rocker cover off and again you'll cant the cam lobes to look absolutely symetrical to the head surface.

no need to break the cam chain just wheel it over till the cam looks good and then fit the clutch basket quick!
