No spark

Hey, im new to this forum and owns a 02 FE501. when i bought it i stripped it all apart and got the frame sandblasted an painted, i put it back together and tried to start it. No spark! I figured i could check the stator and it was very rusty. I tried to get rid of most of the rust hoping i was able to save it but still would not give any spark. i measured the resistance and it is within the limits but when i measured how much volt it was giving i got around 12V-14V tops, shouldnt this be at around 40 or over 40? i think i need to buy a new one but heard that the original SEM stators is not that good. any tips on what to buy? from ebay or something? I live in Norway. i would apreciate some support and words of wisdom :D

Hi

Stators even rusty they still work, I don't like rust also and you can clean most of it with a sand paper, but they still work.

The thing that you much check is the values of the different resitences, if they are in spec it's not a problem of the stator, so you must check conections and plug cap, if everything else is ok it's the cdi.

One last thing, how did you checked voltage if the bike doesn't run ??

Thanks for the reply! :D i have checked the resistance and this is all good, but the way i checked the volts from the stator was by measuring from the black and red wire going from the stator while using the kickstarter. Do you know a way to see if my SEMcoil/cdi is working properly? I have also used sandpaper to remove all the rust from the stator before doing this.

Hi

Believe it or not, the stator can make a spark with a very low voltage, honestly I don't remember the minimum voltage that you must have to make a spark, and measuring that it's not always easy. Another common problem is the minimum voltage from the trigger coil (green wire), but I remember that the minimum is a very low voltage, maybe 8V ???
The red one, when running makes around 250 - 300 V.

Another issue is the sledge, basically is a piece of metal that lets your kick engage sooner or latter, and that can also make a difference to obtain minimum voltage, you can search about that here.

I don't have any way to test the CDI except in other bike, if you have some near friend with a bike, that was the best choice. If you don't have other way I can test it in my bike, that's the best I can do.

If you have problems with the CDI, I can get you one for your bike.

Ok thanks for realy good info! :D I will test the green one tomorow and see how much ill get from this, if everything is fine ill try to find someone with a working cdi to see if that is the problem! :D
