No Auto-Decomp?

Hi guys,
Just removed the head of my 2000 FC600 to inspect the valve seals and piston / oil rings, as the bike has been putting out alot of oil smoke recently.
Found out that my bike has no cam-operated auto -decomp device.
The only decomp device fitted is the cable from the kickstart mechanism.
Does anyone have an idea why this would have been done?
Were there any bikes from the factory which did not have the cam-operated auto decomp?
The bike starts fine with only the kickstart decomp cable.
Cheers for any info...

my 95 fc501 has only a kickstart operated decomp, so does the 94 fc350 which i bought for spares.

i'm not sure what year they introduced the cam decomp, or why :?

My partsbook has auto-decomp parts dated starting with varying years, from '89 to '95, with some parts specific to certain models, fc from '92, fe from '89, fee from '95.

I've got the '99 workshop manual & the '99 and '00 parts manuals, as well as the '00 owner's manual.
These all show the details of the cam operated decomp.
Reading various threads on the auto decomp device, I'm not sure whether I'm going to replace my current set-up.
It sounds like the device can wear and not be very effective and I may just be adding extra moving parts by fitting it to my bike.
I may add a lever-operated cable decomp on the handlebars to supplement the kickstart decomp.
I've had the kickstart decomp cable snap before and the bike was impossible to start without it, so it would be good to have a back-up.
What are everyone's feelings on the various decomp devices?
Should I fit the auto decomp device?
Should I continue to run only the kickstart decomp which has been working OK?
Should I add a manual decomp lever to the handlebars?
Let me know your opinions....
Cheers

my 501 starts well with just the kicker decomp , i would just add the manual cable as well just for a back up device. i would'nt go to all the trouble of fitting another cam . The less moving parts the better :)

Hi.
Have it as it should be on your model, the kickstarter decomp system works well.
A improvement should be to have a lever up on the handlebar.
Do not fit the auto decomp.
You have a wear on the mechanism that is activated by the kickstarter shaft, we weld it and grind it to the correct shape.
Right adjusted you can kickstart the engine by hand, i have seen it done due to the guy had a foot injury.

Cheers guys,
I'm going to keep my kickstart operated decomp and fit a secondary cable operated manual decomp on the handlebars.
I'll leave my existing camshaft (without the auto decomp device) as it is.
Thanks again!

Well the kickstart activated decomp was apparantly left off e-start first generation motors (at least on my 97 600 it was). It only came with the auto decomp which never worked and is not needed as that 10 pound starter that sits in front of the motor will spin up anything. It is however unkickstartable.

My guess would be that after the e-start was introduced in 96 the kick start models then only came with the kick start decomp as it was all that was really needed. And conversely the e-start models only had the auto.

In 2001 the new motor was introduced which came with all three decomp's standard. e- start or not.

Remove the camactivated decomp?

It is just to remove the cam operated decomp?
Less stuff up there s would feel safer ,-))
Have a aluminiumsprocketwheel should i change that to a steel?
With best regards
