Newbie w/ old, beat FE350

I have always been a fan of the Bergs since watching team Surdyke run the Flat River Grand Prix in the early-mid 90s.(south of St. Louis MO)
I saw an older (95-96) FE350 on Craigslist needing motor work & when the $ dropped to $250 I decided to take a chance on it. Expecting the worst, but hoping for something not catastrophic. Well it appears the top of the engine is toast. It dropped both ex. valves & on top of that, didnt have proper anti-freeze protection & the cyl. cracked due to freezing.
At this point what would be my best option for the bike? (A 6.5 out of 10, if it were running)
Motor swap -limited, due to the L-R placement of drive, exhaust etc.
Find a top end ( would have to be cheap to make economical sence)
Part out :
The bottom end seems to be OK.
Ohlins shock : is it compatible with Japanese bike for a sweet upgrade?
Same with the forks, does it have a steering stem that would say ,fit a KDX or maybe my RMX250.
On a positive note, by doing a little reseach on the Bergs I have got the wants for a new one. They are so sweet.

hello sir,
theres a guy on ebay with a husaberg 600 engine, search "husaberg 600 motor" was just put on there recently, im not sure what parts will swap out with the old machines but there are other parts used on ebay but a lot of times the engine parts are expensive for what they are, you can find service manual downloads from husaberg.com/service/downloads but i dont know quite how old they go but service and parts manuals are available for some old ones...sounds like it needs a lot of major work but you paid a fair price, i should think if you bailed on it you could part out on ebay and on our classified section and get your money back easily.....
FWIW, if your looking for something newer or running in the future, i would shy away from anything pre1997 and also shy away from 2000-2002 model years, before 1997 there was no oil pump, 2000-2002 had an array of issues with electric starts, timing chains and other design flaws, 1997-1999 i think were ok, then anything after 2002 was good....

look on ebay UK there's one there being broken. I think I have a head somewhere. again a barrel will be easy enough to source.

if all else fails I'm 99% certain that the KTM 400 head bolts straight on. it could be the barrels are similar.

regards

Taffy

Thanks for the replies & info. I think I will part this one out & look for one in better mechanical condition.
Thanks again, Gary
