Newbie question: Handling on FS650e

Hey everyone,

I've just picked up a FS650e and i've got some concerns over the handling, its my first bike but im worried about how it turns into corners. The bike just doesnt seem to want to turn in, im taking corners so slowly im sure something is wrong. I've jumped on my mates Husky SM510 and a DRZ400 and im fine on those, so im sure its not a confidence thing. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to what could be wrong?

Cheers
Steve

Tire pressures?

Suspension setup for your weight?

Maybe just a matter of time until you acclimate to the bike?

Hi Steve,

I dunno about the FS, but my FE550e responded heaps better once the sag settings were done (best 45minutes you can spend setting up), I did mine by mysely, so it may not be 100% by the book cos it is hard sitting properly and measuringthe sag at the same time - see your owners manual, it has the setting instructions in there, I still have problems with the front end 'pushing' but am slowly dialing it out with the fork adjustments.

Azza.

when i get a new bike i always set the suspension clickers to the factory settings which can be found in most berg manuels. then set the sag up, which will also give you an indication if you need a lighter or stiffer rear spring.
then once you've got it baselined work from there, making adjustments to get the set-up that suits you best.

the sag or correct springs may not sound that important but they can make a big difference.

Hey Steve,

Could you try to explain what you mean by this?

Cheers,
Simon

i know what you mean ...

the husaberg responds to suspension set up , you really need to dial it in to suit your weight .

i found that my berg steered better with the susp sussed , the forks raised thru the triple clamps , and a 100 mm profile rear tyre . [ pirelli MT 18 HD ]

i know what you mean ...too :)

wich model you have? from 2005 is better, I have a 2004 (644 ccm) and my experience is:
after sag control try to close rear rebound shock abs.
front wheel 16,5", for berg is not a choice is a must...
triple clamp ( for 2005 and up, if you have the cnc variable offset)
carburator idle...I dont know in english how to explane  ...more rpm at minimum...bcouse 650 is a hard job man, til you dont have the right confidence this it can help you...

well my last tests did this but for different reasons (due to the shimstack i ran) but the answer has always been to knock the front compression (under the leg) off around 3 clicks at a time. this induces 'nod' on entering a corner and reduces the trail.

Taffy

I have a thread called "2005 fs650 WP forks" where I explains how I over came this problem. As Taffy explains you need more nod I achieved this by reducing preload on the springs by about 30mm in my case. I also changed offset on the steering stem to 18mm but found I had the opposite occurring ie, turning in too quick. I think it all depend on what you are using the bike for. I ride on winding roads, rarely get airborne so can use less compression damping than say someone who was doing jumps on a supermoto track. The 18mm offset may well work well with the higher spring preload. I did not try that, as the shocks through the handlebars were telling me to go softer.

Hi there Steve, could it be that your body position is defferent when you are riding your Berg compared to when you are on the other bikes? I know that the seat on mine is terribly uncomfortable so I tend to change riding positions which in turn affects handling depending on my comfort level. Just a thought.

erm, feel a bit silly but it turned out to be the tyre pressures after all!!! lol

thought it was worth posting this just in case anyone else was having a similar issue.

:)
