Newbie needs help! Sold my DRZ - SXV 4.5 or FS550E?

Hey guys..

I just sold my DR-Z400SM that I was riding on the street / track. I also had a track specific CRF450R last year which I no longer have.

I'm looking for a bike that I can bomb around on the roads and also race (road racing). I had my mind set on an '07 Aprilia SXV 4.5. I've read all the horror stories about these things but think it might be worth it for the performance / looks.

Now though I found a brand new '07 FS550E locally for $500 cheaper than the Aprilia. The problem is we don't have a husaberg dealer in this city and I don't know the first thing about Husabergs.. Did some reading on the 550e and it seems like a pretty solid setup.. I know though that this thing looks like it'll require as much maintenance as the sxv if not more...

Anyway I'm just looking for some pros and cons.. I know this is a husaberg forum but there are so few of these things around here no one really seems to know all that much about them..

Any advice will be appreciated as I wanna buy a bike this week!!

Thanks!

Tawheed, i was looking at the RXV also but the horror stories got me worried also the weight is on the lard arse side, i went for the FE550 knowing nothing about them and i have to say i'm over the moon with the bike, i've always had jap bikes and was a little aprehensive but it's worked out fine for me. the bike is very light and extremely robust, ergonomically it fits me well(i'm 6'2") were jap bikes were always on the small side for me. i really can't say enough good things about this bike, and the best bit is this forum, there is a huge amount of knowledge here. cheers.

Whitecourt has a dealer, RPM Powersports. Randy is keen and will help to no end, call him and the buy

Take a Berg over SXV 4.5
Mate has the RXV 5.5 and has had 2 new engines put in it over the total of 1 year. (luckily under warranty)

Is it normal for the bike to come with a different set of sprockets?? Should I run the lower gearing??

Thanks!

Some of the FS models came with Euro specs, and added other gearing etc for NA. test them!!! only way to find out what works best for you.

Yeah kinda nice to have options to mess around.. I won't get it til tomorrow night (as long as i can get my insurance and stuff going) and hopefully we have some nice weather this weekend.. Are these picky on oil or just change often?

Welcome tawheed,
I believe you can have good and bad experiences with any brand of bike, and to be honest I think most bikes on the market now days are relatively reliable, quick and good rides if serviced well and often. The average rider will not be able to ride most bikes to the full potential of the bike when set up correctly. So for the majority of us trail riding or SM two wheel lovers, many of the bikes on offer today will give you great service and lots of fun.
However, you have come to the mecca of BERG, and if you read only a small portion of the threads on this site you will soon find that Berg owners are very passionate about their brand of bike. And rightly so, as the people who buy a Berg are people who want something different from what the majority have, and want something very very quick.
They really are very good bikes and are easy to set up and service. I have had a Yamaha and a KTM before the Berg and the Berg is the easiest to service by far. Any info you need is here in "The Doc" or the multitude of subjects and threads, or just ask as you have here.
On the oil front, it is a well trodden subject here and a search on the subject will yield many hours of reading. I have chosen to follow the advice of Dale Lineaweaver on this site who is a very very knowledgeable person in all things Berg, and I use Delo 400 oil changed regularly. You do need to search and read up on this site on Delo 400 as I believe in your part of the world the new formulation of Delo 400 is not advised to be used. Here in OZ we can still get the older formula Delo 400, so maybe you can to over there. It is great oil and very cost effective, and the bike is running great !

Cheers :D

cafey18,

Thanks for the response... Lotsa good information there.. I plan to pick up my fs550e as soon as I fly home tonite! I spent 2-3 hours last night reading after doing the dreaded "oil" search on this forum.. definitely a lot of stuff to read through.. At the end of the day for oil my personal opinion is if you're changing it every 3-5 hours you should be able to get away with running any decent bike specific stuff..

I'll post some pics when I pick her up!!

What was the problem? I had heard from one source it was just oil leaks or is it more sinister? I have had a woody for awhile over an RXV I could motard, but have noticed most of the ones for sale claim that the later model engine has been fitted under warranty!!

If you are road riding your Berg you won't need to change as often as the manual says. I change every 500kms. The hours come up to quick on the road. 15hrs if you are racing it.
