Hi everyone,

I want to buy a bike that I can use as Super motard 75% of the time and rest as a dual sport/advanture for short and long trips. I'm not so interested in any sort of agressive dirt riding but more basic adventure touring of the beaton path.

1 - I am a long time agresive road/track rider and the bike will be used agresively as a
street SM for most of the time.

2 - Also I can see puting on at least 15k a year on the bike.

3 - I'm not scared of maintenince (but do want decent amount of reliability) and I'm plenty
capable in doing my own work.

4 - I want to set it up with motard wheels, larger tank, better seat etc., and second set of
dirt wheels for those adventure trips.

As the news of the KTM 690 roled out It seemd that this would fit the bill pretty good, but as I started researching SM and duel sport forums I descovered couple of bikes I know nothing about, Husaberg and Hukgverna. Where I live I never see either of these and upn recent inquary finding out theres only couple of dealers within 200klm radius.

What realy cought my eye with the Husaberg is the weight, or the lack of it, pretty darn good for a 650 and of corse the power.

How will this bike put up with the milage and will it meet all my above requirements.

All input will be greately aprechiated.

Thanks in advance and sorry for such a long post.

Hi. I don`t own a SM or even a 650 but I will try to shed a little light on your question. These are personal opinions. A Husaberg is a racing bike first so for high mileage usage the bike might not be right for you. The power and weight would be perfect its just the up keep that might cause you some problems because with these bikes you have to stay on top of maintenance and repairs. Remember they are a racing bike first. For being able to switch to a trail bike and back a set of wheels with different tires and a change of sprockets that would be a good idea. The SM suspension would be stiff for off road riding so that might pose a problem in the long run along with other things. Have you considered instead getting a FE and going about this at that angle? Might be better in the long run. By the way I own a FE 501 that has been lowered. Still have 12" of ground clearance and it sets maybe a little taller than a SM. Hope this helps don`t know that much about SM but good luck.

i have the fe 650 with both sets of wheels i use mine every day with the sm wheels but change them and loosen the suspention off when off road.yes the bikes take some looking after mine is haveing the stator rewound at present but if you like tinkering around with the spanners they are a great bike.its the grin factor that gets me and the looks when you pull up.these bikes are exclusiff better than a ducati

agree with wildbill. buy it as an SM and you won't get any true dirt riding at all. you'll wreck the bike that's all. i believe hat they can make a good roadbike and a few here are starting to do big mies with them. reliability is good but all owner's keep on top of things with pre-emptive maintenance.

when you get it you'll undetnd that the idea of sticking it on the dirt i silly! short stiff suspension, massive brakes, mudguards that aren't and then because it handles like shyte you'l fall a lot. as a roadbike it'll be gleaming but after a day on the dirt it'll be trashed! scraped, graunched and you vowing never to do it again!

regards

Taffy

Thanks for the input guys.

Sorry didn't clarify, but one of the questions I ment to ask was which bike model would be better to start with SM or Enduro (dual sport).

Now one thing that concerns me a bit is that this Maintenance isue is constantly reinterated. Frequent maintenance to what degree??

If I take lets say 4 week trip to a place like Baja and rack up say 6000klm's, what am I looking at with this bike in order to make it through, maintenaince, failures etc. while on the trip??

Thanks again.........V
