Hello, I recently picked up a 01 fe650 w1900 km on the clock. Unfortunately the bike is not running. Overall the bike is in pretty good shape. The previous owner did the yammie starter and the cam chain/ tensioner. The bike turns over on the elect starter, has lots of compression on kick...LOTS. I pulled the plug ...it is a standard NGk and I have a orange spark...not blue. My plan is to get the bike going for next spring , so no rush, but I would like to get it upgraded to avoid any further issues. The manual decomp lever seems to have an awful lot of slack. I'm wondering if I'm better off removing the manual decom or remove the auto? I'm planning on switching the cam to the hot cam. Does the auto decomp work with the hotcams. I also plan on doing the delorto refresh, softer valve springs and a new stator. Any advice or tips on my plan of attack would be appreciated. Oil plug looks good so I don't think I have any bottom end issues at this point.

Thanks in advance

you really want the later auto decomp. it's a plug n play type bit and worth it. you can't really start the bike on the leccy start with a manual decomp. if it is decomping it won't start and if you stop it decomping it slows the motor...

I just bought the updated cam and related parts like the cam gear with out the screw that falls out along with the new style chain guide and chain

be careful which DVSK you get they are not all the same see link in my sig

a ktm hotcams 3015 is a very nice cam and works with the later auto decomp but its not really straightforward to align the cam sprockets 100% correctly, also need to check piston to valve clearance

search for a thread "camshaft alignment various years"

I used to start my bike with the manual decomp on the leccy button :p

pull the decomp crank it over for 4 or 5 seconds then release the lever

auto decomp was installed at the time but had a broken spring

if you upgrade using your stock cam, you must remove approx 1.5mm from the cam sprocket face. if you go with a new cam, you don't.

quite right Ned. for the 2001s and the very early 2002s BUT NOT ALL - the cam shoulder is too wide so I take 1.9mm off and leave the shoulder 0.1mm proud. this stops the decomp clipping the edge of the balance holes drilled in the sprocket.

20 press-ups being done as we speak! :p :p
