i'm in columbia south carolina and until recently i always rode and owned street bikes, mostly sohc honda 750's and my norton commando 850. i had a chance to pick up an 02 fc550 for 1000bucks and a basketcase 883 sporster recently. fun bike and all however, the kick start shaft doesnt seem to be very tough and has broken on me, happened to the previous owner twice. is this a common problem for this bike or do i need to look deeper into the problem on mine?

The new kickstart shaft should be an improved (hardened) shaft. You may want to check the autodecompression device on the cam and the one on the kickstart for proper operation.
