Hi, I just picked up a '05 FE550 last week and I'm super excited.

In the past I swore I'd never get a 500+ cc (a little large for my weight and riding style) bike but this bike came up at a great price so I jumped on it. The bike is in good shape but does have a lot of hours on it (340hr, 13'500km) so I'm not sure how far I'll get before I need to rebuild. I'm hoping to make it through the season with basic maintenance before I need to tear it apart.

Until then I'm looking forward to trail riding it this weekend for the first time (and a little terrified). I already know the bike has more power than my TTR 250 and I hope it's got handling to match. I can't wait!

I'm just outside Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Handling to match - they do!

At least I loooove the light but super stable handling ... The power is so linear too. Amazing.

Rode a 550 once around a suburban neighborhood - fell in love with the motor character! 'Twas an 05. For sale for a pittance - something like 30 hours on the clock, price around $2500 (which is very very low around here - seems that bikes are generally 50% more expensive here than in Europe for instance.) Didn't have $2500 ... Should have sold that kidney! Oh well ...

I WILL own one someday though! Mildly jealous but mostly happy for you :) Keep us posted!

Well I took the bike out in the woods yesterday and had a blast on the 550! The power was very smooth but never ending. I was worried it would be too abrupt or agressive but it was nice and controlled.

I'm going to like having all that power on tap, the old bike just couldn't throttle me out of some situations and would leave me in some tricky places (lots of steep hills out here).

I am finding the ergonomics a little cramped (I'm ~186cm) so I'll be looking at bar risers, a taller seat and a larger brake lever adjuster cam.

awesome! Thought you might like it!!

yes, I hear you on the ergos, they're a little "racy", but I think I can safely say youll easily be able to make it feel very right without major surgery, just the parts you list ... I am e.g. super happy with the tall seat on my 570, even only a slight raise made a nice difference. keep us posted please!

What really helps with the cramped ergonomics is bar risers. I'm 5'10" and on my '03 and my '10 it felt like I was getting pulled too far down and forward, raising the bars took care of it.
