Thank you in advance for the advice.

1. What is your skill Level (be honest)?

I rode a Yamaha 400 enduro in my 20s’. In my 30’s I rode an HD lowrider. I have ridden some dirt but not much.

2. What's your height & weight?

6’ 3” 265lbs

3. What year, make, & model of motorcycle are you coming from? And, what do you want the new bike to do better?

I’ve borrowed a few bikes but nothing set up really well for me.

4. What's your ballpark budget?

$3,000

5. What types of terrain will you be riding?

My girlfriend rides dual sport on a crf230, my kids now have pw80, crf80, TTR-125 and are starting to ride single track at our local OHV park (Hollister hills). I would like to be able to “connect trails” and occasionally ride to work so a plated street legal bike would be best.

6. Will you be racing or just play riding?

Play. Keep up with the kids, keep up with the girlfriend etc. It would be nice to be able to cruse highway speeds for short distances if I wanted to. I really like the idea of a big cc Husky or Husaberg- looking at one on CL that is a 2004 FE550 but it seems a lot of folks shy away from the big powerful bikes for novices. I figure at my weight, a 250 will be too small in a short time as I progress. A light weight bike seems more important with power to move me. Perhaps a G2 throttle tamer to slow things down at the bottom end???

If you know how to operate a throttle properly, you’ll be fine. Don’t go by others choices, make your own. Getting back into riding can be a little daunting but it comes back to you.

You can use a chainsaw file to modify the throttle to do exactly what the G2 will do.

not too much power, not for your weight anyroads.

nice bike and the 550 is rare. you'll like it.

Thanks guys. Not to hard to find parts for a rare bike like that? I spoke to a local mechanic and he thought it would be difficult to find parts for that bike.

I don't own one (I have a 570, a later model). I want one and am getting one, so I keep track. A couple friends own one, and there is a unusually large population of classic Husabergs here.

It seems to me that parts can be found, and that ownership is enjoyable. These bikes are absolutely magic to ride; However I'd also say that enjoyment of mechanical intimacy is required :)

There are parts which are proving quite hard to get from KTM/Husaberg stock - e.g. connecting rods - but the aftermarket has solutions for anything I have seen.

I wouldn't consider you an absolute beginner. For someone of your experience level the 550 is going to be fine I think. The handling character is very stable (but not heavy or slow!), and while there is ample power, it is very very linear and controllable.

Conversely, I learned on a Kawasaki ER-6n, a 650cc parallel-twin streetbike which is considered "docile" and good for beginners. It felt muuuuuch scarier than a 550 as it was so top-heavy and the throttle all rubber-bandy and unpredictable.

Wow, that’s quite unlike my experience with the 550.

And if the 550 is a pickup truck, then the DRZ is a container ship :O

He must have meant the 450 was the truck and the 550 the sports car because there's a world of difference in power between the two.

I always say buy something you will grow into and not out of. I went from a CanAm 500MX (devil bike) to a Honda XR600 (fun but too heavy and slow) to my FE650e (just right). I have a Revloc clutch in mine and I can ride it easy but the power is always there if I want it.

I have a 2010 FX 450 for sale
super low hours
probably under 20 hrs so its almost brand new
Only made the 70degree engine a couple of years
reliable and easy to ride
Im in the midwest near chicago
