So I got a set of Maxxis Desert IT tires and I realy should put them on myself.

Any tips ?

I have extra tubes and lube and gloves and clamps and old carpet and a big tire iron and a little tire iron and a place to do it.

Should I go for it ?

Of course you should, no reason not to.

Taking the tyres off is easy, make sure you break the seal of the tyre by standing on the edge all the way round. Choose a point to start working the tyre off, and kneel on the opposing edge and make sure the tyre is fully into the groove of the wheel, thats the trick to remember.

Same method putting the tyre on just in reverse with plenty of lube.

Trickiest bit i find is seating the valve of the tube when refitting the tyre but you should manage.

When you've finished have a beer and feel good.

What do you think I should rap that rime with ?
I have duct tape and electricle tape.

RE: Goooooooooooo!

So, I pinched a tube in front and had to change it and the back has a minor leak. If it looses more than 5 psi today I will chang it out. If not maybe some Fix-A-Flat and call it good.

RE: Goooooooooooo!

The easiest way I have found for mounting new tires is to put the tube in the tire and then mount on the rim. Use plenty of WD 40 for the lubricant and good tire irons. I also use baby powder on the tube before putting in the tire and inflate the tube just enough to takke shape. Last part of the tire to go on is near the rimlock.

Ya, I couldn't do it that way (tude in tire) this time. Holding steady at 20 psi. front and rear.
Did I get the wrong tire ? Kind of alot of wear for one 40 mile ride. Its dry but still.
Should I have gotten the IT and not the Desert IT ?

RE: Goooooooooooo!

The Dessert IT is a good Tire known for long lasting very hard rubber compound very hard change in colder temps. The knobbs will round a bite then stay that way for long time. The plane IT is softer. Just ride and have fun and they will all wear out and cost too much.

Jampe, you're on the money with those videos. There's 3 of Doug Shapinsky ( or whatever) changing them. I watched them over & over again & can now change a rear tyre in about 4 minutes.

Use 3 tyre levers, not 2, that's the biggest trick. I use 3 levers that are 8" long & fit in my bumbag. No lube required when you're out on the trail. I dont even take the front off anymore, just do it on the bike.

Remember what Doug says, " If your sweating, your doing something wrong !"
