My son wanted this bike...Initial inspection turned up a few things that I needed to fix. It's been a nightmare ever since. Replaced front rotor, front brake pads, then had electrical problems. Rewired most of the bike. New starter solenoid, tires, headlight, clutch slave cylinder and gasket. New oil plug, had to use an impact wrench to get the old one out. Made me wonder if the oil was ever changed in 5k miles. Master cylinder on the front brake. then the leak from the weep hole, so new gaskets there. Gas tank started boiling so heat shielding under tank and wrapped the exhaust. Now I'm planning on replacing all the engine gaskets as water is leaking from the cylinder head and oil is leaking from mid case gasket. Total nightmare, but I love the power. I hope all the repairs end soon. The Honda crf 450r is so much more reliable...but not street legal. Anyway enough rambling, I gonna need some help cracking the case, I hope you guys can help.

:O Congrats on the bike, if that's the correct term :)

These ought to be quite reliable! I'm sure it's worth it to fix - it must have not been taken care of AT ALL in the PO's stewardship. Welcome and do keep us posted on progress please!

The previous owner must have never done ANYTHING to that bike. My 11 450 has 109 hours on it and has never been opened up.

That engine is one of the more reliable. But nothing can survive a bad owner and no maintenance. Hope you not give up on it!

To help you with cracking the case; you can find the workshop manual on this site. There you will find step by step instructions with pictures, torques and so on. ofcourse a few special tools will come in handy, which you will also find in that manual. But I'm sure it's possible without.

Best of luck and ask any questions as the people on this site are very knowledgeable.

Wow all those problems do sound like a nightmare of trouble. It's unfortunate that the PO didn't take care of it. I have the exact same bike and at 210 hours very little work has been required except riding it! I did replace stock slave cylinder with Oberon one from Britain and have had only one exhaust valve go tight and needed a shim. But honestly my "Sven" has been amazing and besides routine tires, chains, sprockets, oil and fluid changes I can't complain.

Maybe it's because it's been lady driven and maintained hahaha just had to put that guys! :p But don't give up on the 70 degree engine it's smooth and powerful and I hope that it can get sorted out so you can have some fun with the bike.

Yeah I agree with everyone the PO must have not done any maintenance on your bike. I have owned a lot of brands and sizes in the 40+ years I have ridden and I have not found a bike that pulls as strong or feels as light as my Berg's size for size.
The 450 that I have was not maintained by it's 2nd owner but I think the 1st owner was more meticulous with scheduled maintenance. I am still working thru a few thing like over heating and boiling the fuel and it already had the header pipe wrapped and a heat shield on the bottom of the tank. It had stripped out the water pump impeller and I could not find one to match what was in it so luckily the KTM parts work and I think I have it under control now. Noting bad enough I needed to split the cases though. Even with the issues I have had this is by far the most fun 450 I have ever ridden on tight single track trails.
Please keep us up to date on the progress.
