I just bought a husaberg FE 600, My Bike

Comments please guys and girls! be honest I'd rather knwo what I'm letting myself in for!

I bought it becuase I have a couple of 125cc pit bikes (one supermoto, one off road) and fancied a BIGGER version.

IT can be saftly stated that this purchase was most definatly an impulse buy..

Just reading through a few posts and wanted some advise.

If I use this for commuting to work (30 mins approx 17 miles each way) will it need the same level of servicing that a raced bike would need? 200 hours full rebuild I have read.... sounds expensive.... what costs are we talking?

I plan on trying some green laneing, possibley a few MX tracks in time and defo supermoto - I have found a brilliant supermoto track that charges £30 for a full day! I run there on my pit bike and love watching the supermoto's charging past the pits sideways!

I beleive this is the enduro version of the model, so will it be up for a MX track? What size jumps will I be able to tackle saftly?

I hate to admit it, but this is my first full size bike and I may have bitten off more than I can chew... I am fully prepared to be "flamed" for it...but would also appriciate it if you could provide some positive feedback also!

Any comments on good dealerships in the UK?

Thanks!

i'd like to reply with a photo of my balls making grapefruits look like tangoreens....but....oh dear god what have I done...

It's one way to learn how to wheelie.

I ain't picked the bike up yet, I just paid the deposit so I dunno if i can kick start it, why are they hard to start?

I have been riding for some time, cbr400rr tri arm, gpz500, sv650s, bandit 650s and zzr 600d is pretty much my riding history. One thing I have learned is the throttle goes both ways and I ain't afriad of going slowish till I get used to it!

Any more comments - particularly about the bike and my earlier questions.

Thanks!

your asking too much from the bike. i think if you sit down and be honest with yourself, ask about the longetivity you demand from commuting, the stress to the engine from SM as you SCREAM it to the redline, and the SMASHING you'll give the suspension over a table top....

not fair really is it on an old race machine that's 9 years old and already given it's all....

parts are reletively cheap and not too hard to come by but something in your description has to give methinks...

search around the 'forums' then mechanical etc and use the search function. you can gain way loads of info as we have MANY old 600 owners here.

there are lots of brits around.

why don't you consider green laning and enduros instead of MX and SM. go to bobmullins.com and search the dates for the truegrit club in lancs/yorks and the WOR (wirral-off-road) for races in north wales.

anyway, that said, welcome to UHE and we look forward to you giving info when and wherever you learn it as well.

fair comments taffy, and exactly what I was looking for.

MX probably won't happen to be honest, I was more curious that actually planning on it. I have my pit bikes to hurl over jumps and generally damage!

Green laning does sound very appealing, I used to enjoy off roading in a series 1 land rover...and with it being road registered I will be able to ride it along them with no problems.

I do apprieciate the age of the bike, however is 9 years very old for a berg? I would expect a 9 year old road bike to need some TLC, and regular maintainence, but be more than up to the job at hand, is this not true of an off roader in general or just bergs? (forgive my ignorance)

I will not be commuting on it very often, I think what I was trying to get at...(badly I might add) Is that, if the bike is given an easy time, (green laning and reasonabley paced commutes every so often) is the 200 hours rebuild ...negotiable?

I honestly don't know what to expect from the bike, as I have little experience in the world of off road bikes.

supermoto is definatly going to happen though, as that is my main reason for purchasing it. once a month during summer I will be at the practise track, possibly ever two weeks. it will probably be 6 or 7 x 10 min sessions. not racing, but going quite quick. I completely understand that this might give the bike a hard time...but thats why I bought it!

you CAN ignore some of the stuff in the 200 hour list as long as you accept the risks? i'm not brill with that engine but what i can say is that i've green laned and raced mine since the spring of '02 so it'll be in the middle of it's 5th season.

i did the mains and B.E. last season as well as rings.

i've got it down for the second time right now for gearbox bearings, cam bearings which i've never done! 200 hours? what 200 hours.

HOWEVER it did chew up the camchain, it didn't have an alloy camwheel or camchain tensioner. both of which you have to catch early.

find out what you need to look for and then take the risks for yourself...

good luck!

Thanks Taffy, a voice of experience it seems!

would anyone who has ridden any of the bikes I have listed like to compare the new bike to my current experience? I pick it up on Saturday and CANT WAIT!!!!

Hi
Bought my Berg fe501e as a none runner 6 months ago,The inlet rocker bearing had totaly gone and the outlet was well past its sell by date,so after reading the forum I got out the tool box and set about the engine ,stripped it down an rebuilt it ( without a manual) replaced all damaged parts, fitted new cam,cam chain, flushed out the clutch and bottom end put it back together and crossed my fingers, second kick and the beast lives,
since then i've done alot of green laning and MX,i've now Fitted SM wheels and thrash the life out of it on our local sm track at weekends,Its used everyday for work,it sounds like a bag of nails in a tumbel dryer but goes like S**t of a shovel its done 9000km and wheelies for fun in 3rd.at weekends it regulary upset my mate on there R6's and blades on the B roads (i've not ridden my R6 since I got it running)
Bad points: filling it up every day at weekends 2/3 times a day, changing the oil every other week and the filter when i remember, not good on A roads.no good for long journeys
Good Points : wheelies and stoppies, the sound of the exhaust when you open it up,the torque something else, over all pretty good,
thanks to all on UHE very helpful and DaveCrarkRacing for parts
cheers
( still cannot get E start to work i've tried everything, going to try a big hammer next  )

replacing the camshaft is the 100% cure to the top end sounding like a bag o nails!

did i see a lineaweaver cam for sale here at UHE?

perhaps?

anyway, the later cams will also cure it.

Taffy
Ive replaced the cam,cam tensioner, cam chain, both rocker bearings so in theory it should be ok,No one who lives near me runs a berg ,on the local sm track its huskys and ktms so to be honest i dont know what it should sound like, what cam should I put in it?as for the E start ive read somewhere on this site I should change the cam to a newer model ,I have a 02 on a 52plate and im not 100% which cam to put in it,it would save me buying a big hammer if some-one knows the answer

cheers

they are called the '08' cam. the part numbers then got changed the following year to become KTM freindly type thingy.

i believe the code is now '000' but the point is - it's the standard cam and it comes in all the models and has done through '05 and '06 for sure.

it has different flanks and is better for the valve gear and quieter as well to boot!

why not hammer out a search - go on! you can do it! again, the cam that came with it can be found in the doc but if it was a FE400e it was called an '01' and if it was 470/550/650 it was a '53' cam. if your bike was a 501 it got a 55 cam.

now can i do any more for ye?

regards

Taffy

:D ha-ha

yes you can do more ,part number, phone number and price would be good and where to get it would be even better

thanks

 buy ear plugs so it sounds good..

I had a 2000 FE600 , kicker only.
It to was a bit of a handful to start at first.Everyone seemed to try and kick the day lights out of it.I then watched the maintenance video. I found when the machine was tuned well, you could actually get the kick start lever most of the way through the stroke to about the 3-4 o clock position and give it a quick stab of the boot and it started like a dream.Almost first kick from cold every time or with in the first 3.Same when hot.(standard set up)
I chopped the cam follower bearing out ,through low oil levels I think. Keep an eye on the oil, this one tended to use oil abit.Replaced the cam and alloy cam gear and cam bearings after this.
I rode offroad, I got a touch of water in the carbie at times so I lenghened the over flow hoses on the carb and replaced the filler cap breather with long hose that run down the frame.
When I first brought it ,I went down the highway passing cars and when it come up in the power at 140kmh you could lay back, a pull on the bars in top gear and it would break out into a wheelstand without popping the clutch.
It was one hell of a bike, light and high powered,it would tear tyres to peices if riden in it power range.and quickly wear down the rider,I found to ride it on the bottom end for traction and an easy ride, it would still hold most bike just short shifting off the bottom.
First gear nothing, second nothing, third nothing, forth gear starting to get traction now, Oh dear! where are the brakes I think im going to need them......

Good luck!!

never have any problems starting it from kick, normaly 2nd or 3rd kick at the most,I allso watched the video which is the key to starting it from cold ,once its warmed up its first kick every time, getting used to the left handed kick took a couple of days but now i dont even notice it.pressing the E start would still be easyer when stuck half way up a hill or through a river, :D
