Hello Husaberg owners, this is my first post on this site so here I go!

Recently I attended an estate auction in the midwest USA, and came across a boxed 1994 501 FE.

The bike was bought new in 94, ridden for the summer and for some reason the bike was winterized. (gas removed, carb and coolant drained) and then the bike was put in a large plastic bag with moisture absorbing packs and then crated or boxed for 9 years.

To make a long story short, I purchased the bike in the box, $300.00 cash.

After getting the bike home to my garage, my neighbor and I uncrated the bike. It turns out to be in really good condition.

The original tires still had the rubber strips on each knob, it had an extra seat, a head light / number plate assembly and a rear fender with breaklight still in the wrapper.

The bikes paper work came with the original owners manual, title and bill of sale.

The bikes serial number XXXXXX0000002.

Well after researching on how to bring this thing back to life,

I removed the valve covers and oiled the rockers and cam gear and chain, squirted oil in the cylinder, changed the crank case oil, using synthetic oil. filled the radiator with coolant, cleaned the float bowl and blew the cob webs out of the jets, filled the tires with air, installed a new spark plug and put some gas in her.

And to my surprise, with little effort the Husaberg came to life!

My question is, after idling for several minutes the Husaberg started to spit coolant out of the over flow hose.

So I shut the bike down, not wanting to seize the motor for lack of coolant.

I let her cool down and topped off the radiator and fired her back up, ran her up and down the street a couple of times and put it back in the garage, and the bike was still spitting coolant, but not as bad as before.

I have read on this site that it seems the Husaberg will pass coolant, and the fix seems to be a over flow bottle for the coolant.

Do I need to, or is there a way to bleed the air out of the cooling system.
Is there something I am missing, the coolant is topped off, the cap is on tight and the bike spits coolant, not a lot, just enough make me worry I am doing some thing wrong.

Thanks for listening, excited new / old Husaberg owner!

My plan is to convert her into a Motard for the street, once I get the bugs worked out of her.

Howdy,

Congrats on your smokin deal!!

Sounds like you might have some air trapped in the cooling system which would prevent the coolant from flowing. However, if the rad was filled to the top, once the coolant starts to heat up it will expand and a small amount of water should escape until it finds the level it's happy with.

Here's my advice: Make sure the gas is off and lay the bike over on the left side for about 30 seconds. Stand it up and see if the coolant level went down any. You'll be able to hear the coolant gurgling through the system when you lay it over. If the level is lower then bring the level back up again, to about 10mm below the cap. Then lay the bike over on it's right side, and just for kicks lay it back over on it's left side.

Next, start the bike and see if the coolant is flowing through the rad when you rev it up a bit.

Hope this helps. If it doesn't, make another post and we'll go from there.

Just for your info, I had a 94 & 1/2 501e and this was the ritual I went through whenever I had the rad off or drained the cooling system. And it worked every time.

Sounds like you got a good deal.Keep a eye on the coolant level and keep it topped up.The manual states not to let the bike idle at a stand still any length of time to avoid over heating. You could add a over flow bottle if you want to but the best thing to do is keep a check on the coolant level and ride. There might be still some air in the system but it will work itself out after a few rides just check before you ride and enjoy. There is a lot of information on this site you can download and if you have a question or problem post and somebody will try to help.Good luck and welcome. :D

As the others stated, make sure there is no air trapped in the cooling system and do not let the bike run at a standstill for more than a minute or so.

Check the rubber seal on the rad cap. Then maybe do a pressure test on your cooling system.

Sounds like a great find,

One trick for bleeding air from cooling systems generally is to squeeze repeatedly the radiator hoses to get some surgein and purging happening. My 501 is happy when the coolant is about 8mm below the top. If the rad is full, it will blow some out until it find equlibrium.

Merry Christmas
Steve

After getting all the air out definitely check the radiator cap or better yet simply replace it. Also mid 90's bergs had a problem with the water pump impellers melting and causing boil over. Might want to simply take the screws out of the cover and take a peek at the impeller.

Thanks everyone for the responce to my question.

I had the impeller cover off and its still intact and seems to be working, so thats good news.

What I am going to do is top off the radiator fluids and lean the bike over on both sides to remove any air pockets, set her back up and top off the radiator fluid and see if this works. I think it will.

I talked to my friend who ownes the local Honda Shop in my town and asked him if the CRF's spit water on the ground when hot.

He told me that yes, when you sit at idle with a warm Honda and rev the motor, the Honda will spit water out of the overflow, simply because of no air flow through the radiator, and this is exactly what I was doing.

Sorry, I was nervous with about locking up the motor for lack of coolant, I think I am going to purchase a over flow bottle, just to keep the fluid off the garage floor.

Once again, thanks for the info!

Never seen such old Husaberg. For that kind of money I would have bought it on the spot.
Sometimes the water pump isn't assembled as it should even today.
