Hey,
I am new to this site and this is the first forum I have ever been on. Also I just purchase a used husaberg and it's the first dirt bike I have ever owned. A lot of firsts for me today. I got a 2003 FE 510 with 1800km's and will get it on Friday. Apparently it has been well taken care of. I was just wondering if there is anything I should do or check before riding this bike. I will mainly be riding dirt trails around Invermere, BC and some riding on the street. I can't wait to get it. Any comments would be helpful.

Since it is your first bike a simple check should be checking the oil possibly changing oil and filter, make sure the air filter is clean and oiled, chain tension, seat sag, front and rear wheel bearings and brakes, valve clearances...

You'll know more about the bike once you get out and put some miles on it.

Sound advice there from Husa991... geting some miles under your belt is the best way of acquainting yourself with the bike - they all have personalities of their own which in my experience, tend to reflect the capabilities and attitude of the previous owner/s (unless purchasing new, of course!).

Take it steady at first, then gradually build-up speed as your experience grows and your understanding of the machine develops. Pay particular attention to wheel bearings and chain slack (I didn't, and paid the price), as well as an ear open for any odd sounding knocks and/or rattles.

Above all else... enjoy it - these bikes are a total riot - beats my old R1 on the street, anyday!

Don't be afraid to wrench on it a bit, the more you know about it, the better. Just be careful.

The parts manual is key.

And go ahead, get intement with it.

I finally got the chance to take her out on a few short rides. It took a few days just to get the bike started, but a new spark plug worked wonders. It still is a ***** to start when cold, but starts right up with the electric start once warm. This bike has some serious power, but I am keeping my speed under control for now. Even though I suck at riding, I can't keep the grin off my face, especially when climbing hills. Maybe an 04 is just a difficult bike to start and I am fine with that, but if anyone has any advice on how to improve cold starts, please let me know. Right now it takes a lot of kicking and playing around with the choke to get her going. Thanks.

Kicking's no fun! Check my post today on jetting and see if it sounds like you're too lean. A new pilot jet changed my life (saved a lot of frustration, not to mention my battery).

Also, any time you start, you can pull in the compression release and let it spin a few revolutions, then let out the lever to start. That will help save battery and starter.
