Hi Everyone, Happy New Year,

I'm looking at buying my first dirt bike and the short list is down to a 2005 KTM 525 EXC and a 2006 Husaberg FE 450.

I've owned a ton of street bikes over many years, my first dual sport was a KLR 650, and currently have a KTM 990 ADV which I will never give up!

I'm looking a buying a dedicated off-road machine for doing trail riding and rallys. The Husaberg FE450 is for sale locally and looks to be in good condition. I'm having a good time reading through the forum and seeing what I should be looking for,

Cheers, Vic

both are good bikes. both work reliably. the 520 is a little narrower across the tank, air filter gets ****** more easily. both have more than enough power.

should be good! can't go wrong either way! if you get the Husaberg, they want very little if anything? sometimes the starter gears slip and that requires a 20gbp fix.

that's about it.

525/450

Well we have a 525 ktm and a 650 Husaberg . As we've just got the 650 and studying the manual it appears to be far more maintenance needy ,as its really a high end race engine . So if you like that and appreciate all the real cool things about the Husaberg then great . But if you want a simpler almost complete bullet proof engine the RFS KTM bike and engine are a great combo. Very easy to get parts and accessories for as compared to the older Hussy . I have a friend in Mexico that runs a RFS 450 in his tour company and I think he has about 45000 miles on it and hasn't had to do a thing to it but regular maintenance . There are a lot of Baja guys with similar stories ie. "Chilly White from Enduro 360 " . Probably one of KTM's best built engines in a nice chassis .
At this point for racing I prefer the 525 it just handles and is suspended slightly better ,but the differences are very slight and the KTM has Ohlins on the front which is real nice .
So either bullet proof and straight forward or exotic !

I have the slightly bigger brother to that bike the FE550 and my riding buddy has the KTM 525 ...im in agreement with Punk on this topic

If you are not in love with Husaberg for some reason, and you're obviously not because you still don't have one....go with 525. Bulletproof. Rips. Easy getting parts. Lot of aftermarket goodies. A really, really good bike. As David Knight says, best he has ridden.

Now all of you here go on, shoot me in the leg. :D

Thanks for all the good info guys, I'm going to see the Husaberg on Fri. There is no kickstart lever installed on the bike, would this issue with the slipping starter gear relate to this? I'll bring along a large vice grip and copper pipe to protect the kickstart shaft to check the operation of the kickstarter.

Hi Vic. Mine's for sale at this time... If you search on Kijiji or on Advrider, you'll find it. Problem is that I'm one province to the left.

that's only 3" on a map what's up with ya!

the starter motor gears slip. it has nothing to do with the kickstart which is a mechanical function and can't go wrong.

its just a ka-haa noise when you hit the button. i'd be very surprised if it DID NOT do it from cold so don't be too hard on him!

regards

Taffy
